Barbara Brody of Underhill, a driver education teacher at Peoples Academy in Morrisville, recently received the nation’s highest award for excellence in driver and traffic safety education, the Richard Kaywood Memorial Award. The award is given annually to an outstanding driver and traffic safety educator at the American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association’s annual conference in Pennsylvania.
Daryl Kenny of Bennington has been named Director of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving at Southern Vermont College in Bennington, Vermont. In her new position, Kenny will develop, implement and evaluate a yearly calendar of activities and programs for and with alumni. She will be responsible for providing ongoing customer service and enhancing relationships between alumni and SVC and will act as liaison between the college and the Alumni Association Board of Directors.
The National Association of State Treasurers (NAST) has awarded Vermont State Treasurer Jeb Spaulding the Jessie M. Unruh Award. The award recognizes an active state treasurer’s outstanding service to the profession, the association, and service to his or her state.
Governor Douglas today announced the appointment of Chad Schmidt as Bennington County Sheriff. Schmidt replaces Gary Forrest who retired after 24 years as Sheriff.
“I want to extend my congratulations to Chad,” said Governor Jim Douglas. “I believe he has the experience and skill to keep our communities safe.”
The State Board of Education elected new officers at its September 15, 2009 meeting, the Department of Education announced today. Fayneese Miller of South Burlington was elected Board chair, Ruth Stokes of Williston will continue serving as co-vice-chair, along with Kathy Larsen of Wilmington as second vice-chair.
The election was necessitated by the retirement of Chair Tom James. The governor recently appointed Stephan Morse of Newfane to complete the term vacated by James. Morse’s first Board meeting will be on October 20.
Craig Divis, a high school social studies teacher at Bellows Falls Union High School in Bellows Falls, was named by the State Board of Education as the 2010 Vermont Teacher of the Year at a ceremony held today at the school.

Finalist Terry Frey, a K-12 music teacher at Windsor Junior Senior High School and State Street School in Windsor.
Toof was previously a Human Relations Specialist at Terex Cranes Wilmington in North Carolina. She was originally from St Albans and is glad to be returning home to be nearer to her family. She enjoys soccer, country music and the Dallas Cowboys.
