Barbara Brody of Underhill, a driver education teacher at Peoples Academy in Morrisville, recently received the nation’s highest award for excellence in driver and traffic safety education, the Richard Kaywood Memorial Award. The award is given annually to an outstanding driver and traffic safety educator at the American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association’s annual conference in Pennsylvania.
Brody is the first Vermonter and the second person in New England to receive the award in its 25-year history. The award honors the late Dr. Richard Kaywood, a national leader in driver and traffic safety education. The Pearson Publishing Company and the American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association sponsor the award.
In addition to teaching at Peoples Academy, Brody has taught and served as an administrator at Mount Abraham Union High School in Bristol, held the position of consultant for driver and traffic safety education at the Vermont Department of Education and served on the faculty of Saint Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minnesota. In her 30 years of teaching and educational leadership, Brody has helped develop Project Graduation, peer intervention techniques, parent involvement in driver education and research in teen drowsy driving.
