State Treasurer Jeb Spaulding Recognized for Outstanding Service

The National Association of State Treasurers (NAST) has awarded Vermont State Treasurer Jeb Spaulding the Jessie M. Unruh Award. The award recognizes an active state treasurer’s outstanding service to the profession, the association, and service to his or her state.

“I am pleased to serve in the national association as a way of giving Vermont and all states a significant means to shape far-reaching financial issues that impact us all,” said State Treasurer Jeb Spaulding. “Through the ongoing development of a strong legislative initiative, state treasurers are able to weigh-in on issues ranging from ratings agency reforms to managing the investment implications of environmental change.”

Spaulding was elected President of NAST for a one-year term that ends on December 31, 2009. Prior to becoming President, Spaulding served as Senior Vice President of the organization.

Among the issues Spaulding continues to advance through NAST is the passing of federal legislation authorizing the U.S. Treasury to work with state unclaimed property programs to find owners of matured, unredeemed savings bonds. He also continues efforts to urge the national investment community and federal regulators to examine the financial risks and opportunities presented through global environmental changes.

In presenting Spaulding with the award, New Mexico State Treasurer James Lewis thanked him for his strong leadership in guiding the organization through the transition to a new NAST Executive Director, making key amendments to the association’s organizational constitution, and elevating NAST policy outreach efforts.

Spaulding has actively participated as a member of NAST since he began serving his first term as Vermont State Treasurer in 2003. NAST is the leading voice for state treasury issues in Washington D.C. Spaulding received the award August 30 at the NAST annual conference in California.
