VCIL announces new hire

The Vermont Center for Independent Living has announced an addition to its team, intended to help the organization more effectively meet the needs of Deaf Vermonters. Erin Sanders-Sigmon joins VCIL as an Interpreter Referral Specialist for the Vermont Interpreter Referral Service program.

Sarah Launderville, executive director of the Vermont Center for Independent Living, said, “We are thrilled to have Erin join our team. She is an amazing woman who brings great energy and enthusiasm to our movement.

Robert Currier is Vermont’s Warden of the Year

Robert Currier of Colchester is Vermont's State Game Warden of the Year. A state game warden since 2011, Currier received the award in recognition of his excellent service from Governor Peter Shumlin on May 31 Montpelier.

"I want to thank Robert for his outstanding performance in protecting Vermont's fish and wildlife resources and serving the people of Vermont," said Governor Shumlin. He added that Warden Currier was chosen for “his professionalism, his strong work ethic and willingness to assist other law enforcement agencies.”

Vermont Agriculture Hall of Fame Committee announces 2016 inductees

The Vermont Agriculture Hall of Fame Committee has announced the inductees for 2016.

Recipients are chosen based on their accomplishments and significant contributions to Vermont agriculture. They are:

• Gordon J. Booth, Barre dairy farmer and legislator (posthumously)

• Anne C. Brown, Vermont Morgan Horse breeder and promotor

• Walter and Sally Goodrich, dairy farmers and acclaimed Jersey breeders

• Ralph McNall, dairy farmer and industry leader

City of Winooski announces interim city manager

The City of Winooski has announced the appointment of Raymond Coffey as interim city manager. The City Council confirmed Coffey’s appointment on Monday, July 18th after accepting the resignation of former City Manager Katherine “Deac” Decarreau. Decarreau had served Winooski for the previous seven years as City Manager and has accepted a position at the Chittenden Central Supervisory Union.

VPR receives three national awards for news coverage

In late June, Public Radio News Directors Inc. and emcee Korva Coleman of NPR presented 173 awards to 72 organizations at its conference in St. Louis for work done at stations and other outlets during calendar year 2015. Vermont Public Radio took home three of the awards for commentary, newscast, and arts feature. The annual PRNDI Awards is the only national competition devoted to rewarding outstanding local public radio news in a variety of categories.

"This year's competition was fierce with over 1,200 entries submitted," according to George Bodarky, PRNDI President.

Burlington hires new comprehensive parks planner for park, recreation and waterfront department

Burlington Parks, Recreation and Waterfront in Vermont, has welcomed Nina Safavi as the new Parks Comprehensive Planner.

Nina comes to the department from the Vermont Agency of Transportation, where for the past few years she led innovative and collaborative efforts to utilize data and GIS to improve mapping efforts in the state. She was also invited to share stories of the state's success on a national level.

Merchants Bank supports Shelburne Museum with $5,000 sponsorship

Merchants Bank is sponsoring the Papering the Town: Circus posters in America exhibit at the Shelburne Museum. The $5,000 sponsorship shares circus posters from the 1800's and 1900's with guests through January 22, 2017. This is an exciting exhibit as some of these circus posters have not been displayed since becoming part of the Shelburne Museum's collection, due to their enormous size.
