Northern New England Region/Northeast Division Top
National Red Cross Rankings
The American Red Cross Blood Services, Northern New England Region is proud to report that on October 1 the Northeast Division, of which the Region is a part, was named Division of the Year out of seven divisions by American Red Cross Biomedical Services. These annual rankings placed the Division as first in the country for the 2008 fiscal year; the ranking was based on a combination of metrics including red blood cell, type O blood and platelet collections; attention to quality and cost efficiency. The Division was also honored with the following distinctions:

" 1st in Quality Performance

Shareheat and WARMTH

Chittenden Bank recently committed a $20,000 donation to Shareheat and a $20,000 donation to WARMTH emergency home heating assistance programs.

For over 20 years, Shareheat has provided emergency home heating assistance to residents within CVPS's service territory. Funds are raised from the general public and matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $100,000 by CVPS shareholders. Since 1987, Shareheat has raised over $2.8 million to prevent Vermonters from going cold during the heating season.. Hoping to ensure no one goes cold for lack of heating funds, CVPS has kicked off its 2008-2009 Shareheat campaign with a $100,000 pledge.

State Awards $40,000 to Town of Hartford for Growth Planning
Hartford Receives Growth Center Award To Plan For Future Development

WHITE RIVER JCT., Vt. - The state has awarded a $40,000 grant to the Town of Hartford to help the town plan for Growth Center designation, a move that would help streamline future development and create jobs and housing opportunities.

"I'm very pleased that Hartford won this grant, and that it might someday benefit this project," said Governor Jim Douglas, who presented the check to town officials after watching a presentation on a proposed redevelopment project on Prospect Street in White River Junction. "This is why I signed the Growth Center bill, to encourage communities to create more compact and dense mixed use development in appropriate areas."

Week Ending October 25, 2008
There were 1,190 new regular benefit claims for Unemployment Insurance last week, an increase of 389 from the week before. Altogether 6,905 new and continuing claims were filed, 363 more than a week ago and 2,009 more than a year earlier. In addition, the Department processed 1,161 claims for benefits under Emergency Unemployment Compensation, 2008, a decrease of 36 from last week.

VEDA BOARD APPROVES $55.5 MILLION
IN BUSINESS PROJECT FINANCING

approved $55.5 million in financing to support development projects throughout Vermont totaling $64.1
million.

Champlain Housing Trust Receives Grant from TD Charitable Foundation
October 29, 2008 - Burlington, VT - On the opening day of the Champlain Housing Trust's annual Community Campaign, the organization and the TD Charitable Foundation announced a $15,000 grant award. Now in its third year, the "Housing for Everyone" grant competition made a total of $1.5 million in donations to 48 affordable housing groups from Maine to Florida, including three grants in Vermont.

Coveted honor among three awards presented to Vermont Life by International Regional Magazine Association
MONTPELIER - A revitalized Vermont Life magazine has been named among the most improved magazines in the United States and Canada by the International Regional Magazine Association (IRMA).

Judges for the 45-member association called Vermont Life "much improved in design and in editorial, but most significantly in its focus. Throughout there is a palpable sense of the readers' interests and concerns."
