St Michael’s names City of Burlington Payroll Manager as SMC Associate Director of Payroll Services

John P. McCarthy of St. Albans has been named Associate Director of Payroll Services for Saint Michael’s College. He started at the Catholic liberal arts institution January 3. Mr. McCarthy was senior accountant/payroll manager for the City of Burlington from 2008 to the present. He was an accountant for three law firms in Arkansas and Texas from 2000 to 2008, and before that, he served 20 years in Accounting and Finance Offices in the U.S. Air Force.

Gov. Shumlin appoints Barry Peterson to Magistrate Judge post

Gov. Peter Shumlin has announced the appointment of attorney Barry D. Peterson of Fletcher as Magistrate Judge of the Family Division of Vermont’s Superior Courts. Peterson has held the post in an acting capacity in Chittenden, Lamoille, and Franklin counties as needed in recent years.

“Barry’s broad experience, both in law and in his community, make him the perfect fit for Family Division Magistrate,” Gov. Shumlin said. “He has already served in this role in an acting capacity, so he’ll hit the ground running.”

Local attorney receives certification in elder law

The National Elder Law Foundation (NELF) – the only organization approved by the American Bar Association to offer certification in the area of elder law - has announced that Glenn A. Jarrett, Esq. of Burlington, Vermont has successfully completed its examination leading to such certification.

Certification in elder law – one of the fastest growing fields in the legal profession – will provide a measure of assurance to the public that the attorney has an in-depth working knowledge of the legal issues that impact the elderly.
