Southwestern Vermont Health Care (SVHC) has launched a foundation and tapped a senior college official, Carolanne Marquis, as its executive director and David Newell, the president of Wills Insurance, as the chairman of its board of directors. The Southwestern Vermont Health Care Foundation takes over the health system’s fundraising activities, which had been operated as a department of SVHC. The foundation’s goal is to expand on the health system’s existing fundraising work and prepare it for the future.

Rep. Peter Welch has announced that Jacob Jackmauh of St. Johnsbury Academy has won the 31st Annual Congressional Art Competition for high school students. Jackmauh’s piece, “Aaaah!,” will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year.

Taking second place was Lucie Stein of Colchester High School with the piece “Unfinished Evolution.” In third was Jamie Cyr of the Danville School with “Self Portrait.”

Three University of Vermont students and a recent alumnus have been awarded Fulbright U.S. Student Program Scholarships. The prestigious awards are fully funded, year-long academic fellowships which enable seniors, recent graduates and graduate students who have an outstanding academic record to live abroad and conduct research or teach English as part of an intellectual and cultural exchange.
