One very special and hard-working school custodian was chosen recently by the Vermont Agency of Education (VT-AOE) and the Vermont School Custodians & Maintenance Association (VSCMA) as Vermont’s 2013 School Custodian of the Year. Lloyd Cuenin, a custodian at the Warren Elementary School, was honored at the school’s spring celebration.

Gov. Peter Shumlin announced today the appointment of Morgan MacIver, a student at Twinfield Union School, to the Vermont Board of Education. MacIver, who will be a junior at Twinfield next fall, will fill one of the two student seats on the panel.

“Morgan’s commitment to her own academics and her focus on independent study through the Renaissance Program has been passionate,” Gov. Shumlin said. “But it is her commitment to transforming education and ensuring Vermont schools are the best in the nation that makes her the perfect choice for the Board.”

Jean Luc Dushime, a photographer and VCAM producer, won the 2013 Hometown Video Award from the Alliance for Community Media. Mr. Dushime's video was shot and edited for the African band A2VT (Africa to Vermont). The song "Winooski, My Town" is dedicated to Winooski, a town in Vermont that is diversifying rapidly with the arrival of immigrants and resettled refugees. "I have a dream, and VCAM has helped give me the means to pursue it," said Mr. Dushime. As a teenager, Mr. Dushime survived the Rwandan genocide of 1994 and war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo nine years later.
