95-year-old Randolph man named nation’s Outstanding Senior Volunteer
Randolph’s Maj. Melvin McLaughlin has spent more than 40 years selflessly volunteering at his local medical center, Gifford. On Wednesday that volunteerism was recognized – big time.
The 95-year-old retired U.S. Marine, fondly known as “Major,” was named the country’s 2013 Outstanding Senior Volunteer by Home Instead Senior Care.
Home Instead is the world’s largest provider of non-medical, in-home care services for seniors. Last year it launched the Salute to Senior Service Contest to recognize senior volunteerism.

Everett participates in APGO scholars and leaders program
Elise N. Everett, M.D., University of Vermont assistant professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences and Fletcher Allen gynecologic oncologist, is currently participating in the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) Academic Scholars and Leaders Program as a member of the 2013-14 class.
SVHC to honor Martinez and Greenberg at annual harvest ball
Southwestern Vermont Health Care (SVHC) will honor two distinguished individuals from the greater Bennington area at its annual Harvest Ball, Saturday, Sept. 7. The health system will recognize longtime Hoosick Falls physician, Dr. Philip Martinez, with the SVHC 2013 Health Care Leadership Award. At the same event, the health system also will recognize local businessman, philanthropist, and entrepreneur Norman Greenberg and the Greenberg family with the SVHC 2013 Distinguished Community Service Award.
