Under sunny skies, Prouty participants raise more than $3.1 million

With sunny skies and light winds making the day feel like a million dollars in Hanover, more than 5,000 participants and some 1,300 volunteers teamed up to triple the feeling by raising more than $3.1 million for cancer care and research in the Prouty, Northern New England’s largest charity fundraiser.

People from all over the country come together every July to raise funds by walking or cycling through neighborhoods and roads in New Hampshire and Vermont, rowing on the Connecticut River, or hitting the links at the Hanover Country Club.

Vermonter receives advocacy award at national conference

The executive director of Disability Rights Vermont, Vermont’s protection and advocacy system, was honored at a national civil rights conference recently.

Ed Paquin is the recipient of the National Council on Independent Living Region 1 Advocacy Award for his dedication to promoting the rights of people with disabilities and advancing the independent living movement in New England (which comprises NCIL’s Region I). The award was presented on July 29 at a banquet in Washington, D.C.

Waterbury legislator to join Shumlin Administration

Gov. Peter Shumlin and Agency of Natural Resources Secretary Deb Markowitz has announced that Waterbury Representative Rebecca Ellis will join ANR’s Department of Environmental Conservation as Senior Counsel for Government Affairs on August 10. Ellis resigned her seat as state representative for the Washington-Chittenden District yesterday. Gov. Shumlin will appoint a replacement before the start of the next legislative session in January.

Champlain College honors staff and faculty

President Donald J. Laackman and the Champlain College Board of Trustees are pleased to announce the 2015 recipients of the Edward Phelps Lyman Professorship Award, the Francine Page Excellence in Teaching Award and the Elizabeth A. Durick Staff Service Award.

The Edward Phelps Lyman Professorship is awarded to a senior faculty member of the College community who has shown dedication to students and Champlain College through a record of service and excellence in teaching and advising and through work on faculty and College committees.
