VERMONT PHYSICIANS TO RECEIVE GUIDES ABOUT
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Berlin, VT - A physician guide about domestic violence will be distributed to all Vermont primary care providers, emergency room providers and OB/GYNs as part of a New England-wide project, organizers have announced.
The cost of intimate partner violence exceeds $5.8 billion each year, 4.1 billion of which is for direct medical and mental health care services, according to a 2003 study by the CDC. The health effects of domestic violence are staggering. In addition to the immediate trauma and injuries caused by abuse, domestic violence contributes to a number of chronic health problems and can interfere with the management of other illnesses.
Cornelius Hogan Resigns from Board
of Trustees
Cornelius (Con) Hogan has resigned his position on Fletcher Allens Board of Trustees. Hogan served as Secretary of the Agency of Human Services in Ver-mont from 1991-1999, and served as Acting Chair of the Vermont Health Care Authority in 1994. Hogan was appointed to the Fletcher Allen Board of Trustees by the Fanny Allen Corporation in December of 2002. No reason for the resignation was given and no replacement yet has been nominated.

BURLINGTON - The Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce and GBIC
have gone live on the Web with "VOTE! 2004," which contains the results of
a survey of candidates running for state offices in the November 2 General
Election. Results are available at www.lcrccsurvey.org/candidates.
Those surveyed include candidates for Governor and Lieutenant Governor as
well as candidates for State Senator and State Representative from
Chittenden County. With a new and exciting theme and Web-based access,
the results are intended to help the business community learn more about
candidates and encourage and remind them to vote on Election Day.

Herlihy Is New Deputy Commissioner Of Vermont Department Of Tourism &
Marketing
MONTPELIER, Vt. - Cathy Herlihy of East Montpelier has been appointed the
new Deputy Commissioner of the Vermont Department of Tourism & Marketing
(VDTM). Herlihy takes over the post from Sybil Chicoine who left in late
September for a job in the private sector after serving as VDTM's Deputy
Commissioner since January of 2002.
Since 1995 Herlihy has been Director of Training & Marketing with the
Vermont Small Business Development Center (SBDC). SBDC is a non-profit
partnership of government, education, and business whose goal is to spur
Vermont's economy by helping small businesses succeed and grow through
training and consultation. SBDC is partially funded by the U.S. Small
Business Administration, the Vermont Department of Economic Development,
and the Vermont State Colleges.

Computer Sales Tax Holiday
October 9-11
Montpelier, Vt.-Governor Jim Douglas is urging Vermonters to take
advantage of this year's second computer sales tax holiday being held
Saturday, October 9 through Monday, October 11.
The tax holiday is the third of its kind in Vermont. The first, championed
by Douglas in 2002, was approved by the Legislature for early August of
2003, another was held in August of this year, just before students
returned to school.
"Our first computer sales tax holiday was such a success I urged the
Legislature to approve additional opportunities," Governor Douglas said.
Under the guidelines issued by the Vermont Department of Taxes, personal
computers costing up to $4,000 are tax-exempt when purchased by an
individual.
The Governor believes personal computers encourage Vermonters-young and
old-to take advantage of technology, advance their skills and improve

GREEN MOUNTAIN POWER SENDS CREWS
TO HELP RESTORE POWER IN FLORIDA
COLCHESTER, VT... Green Mountain Power is sending crews to Florida to help
restore power to the areas devastated by the multiple hurricanes.
"The situation in Florida is obviously quite desperate. We know
how complex and exhausting it is to coordinate and repair service
after a major event, and how important it is to have outside crews
available to speed up restoration. Our crews are eager to help
their fellow workers in Florida tackle the monumental task of
repairing extensive damage to the electrical system," said Mary
