Lyndon State College meteorology students participate in National Science Foundation Research

Next May, Lyndon State College Meteorology Professor Nolan Atkins and two Lyndon students will travel to Norman, Okla., where they will take part in a large national study on the formation of tornadoes. Atkins and the students, Tony McGee of Penacook, N.H., and Rachel Ducharme of Charlestown, R.I., are among about 20 other scientists in the study. The National Science Foundation has underwritten Atkins study for three years with a grant of $239,000. During the first two years, Atkins will collect data for his portion of the study, and the third year will be used for analysis.

Dr. Jianke Yang publishes new book, has another on the way, and receives AFOSR grant

Dr. Jianke Yang, professor in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics at UVM's College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (CEMS), has written a new textbook with coauthor Maksim Skorobogatiy entitled Fundamentals of Photonic Crystal Guiding. The textbook, which provides an in-depth introduction to the field of photonic crystals, has been published by Cambridge University Press.

"Publishing any book is a great accomplishment, but publishing with a prestigious press such as Cambridge is a true distinction," says CEMS Dean Domenico Grasso.

Gregory Woodworth named General Counsel

Gregory D. Woodworth has been named senior vice president and general counsel of National Life Group. “In his three years with National Life, Greg has shown he is a superb lawyer of the highest integrity,” said Mehran Assadi, NLGroup’s president and chief executive officer. “Greg has a broad knowledge of our business, a deep appreciation of our regulatory environment and a keen ability to explain complex legal issues in ways that allow us to understand the importance of the issue,” said Assadi.

Former surgeon General Koop to receive Research!America advocacy award

C. Everett Koop, MD, ScD, former U.S. Surgeon General, will receive Research!America’s 2009 Raymond and Beverly Sackler Award for Sustained National Leadership. The award recognizes Koop’s decades-long commitment to advocacy for public health. He will be honored March 24, 2009, at the 13th Annual Research!America Advocacy Awards event at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, DC.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont appoints new president and CEO

Don George, a Barre native with more than 20 years experience in health care and health financing, has been named President and Chief Executive Officer of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont (BCBSVT) and its affiliate HMO, The Vermont Health Plan (TVHP). The appointment to lead BCBSVT, which has been named by US News and World Report as one of Americas Top 50 Health Plans is effective immediately.

Joshua Cleaver New Designer at Found Line

Joshua Cleaver has been hired as a new designer at Found Line. In his new capacity, he will be handling print design and production duties for clients such as EnergySmart of Vermont, Vermont Public Radio, True Body Products, the Center for Media & Democracy and Seventh Generation. In his previous life, Josh was a Young Rembrandt Art Instructor and has done freelance design work for a number of clients. He is a member of the Burlington-based rock bands Second Agenda and Silent Mind, and regularly participates in studio sessions with other local musicians.

VIT Worldwide Videoconferencing hires Schouten as regional manager

VIT Worldwide Videoconferencing recently hired Stephen Schouten as Regional Manager for the Johnson, Middlebury, and St. Albans VIT studios. Stephen is taking over for John Sheets, who after 14 years as Regional Manager, was promoted to VIT Director of Technical Operations. Although Stephen will spend time at all three VIT sites, he will make the St. Albans site, located at the Bellows Free Academy, his main office.
