Middlebury College announces recipients of 2009 Fellowships in Environmental Journalism

Administrators of the Middlebury College Fellowships in Environmental Journalism recently announced ten fellowship recipients for 2009. The program, in its third year, is designed to support intensive, year-long reporting about environmental issues by journalists at the start of their careers. According to Scholar-in-Residence in Environmental Studies and Program Director Bill McKibben, the pool this year included “a fiercely competitive field of applicants.”

Emergency Department Staff and EMS Workers updated on Burn Care

Few of us have never suffered a burn, whether a sunburn or a burn on a hot pan. Minor burns are very painful, but severe burns can have permanent, and sometimes deadly, effects.

“A major burn is one of the most critical injuries that we see in the Emergency Department,” Linda Libby said. “It damages the skin, muscles, and causes severe fluid loss.” Appropriate and immediate care for a major burn can be a matter of life and death.

Eight students, two staff members travel to Kolkata, India, on Saint Michael’s College service trip

An incredible onslaught of people, activity, rickshaws, food vendors, goats, cows, over-loaded buses—all mingling on the streets of the teeming city of Kolkata.

Such was the impression of the eight students and two staff members from Saint Michael's College, who spent three weeks, May 18 to June 8, doing volunteer work in Kolkata (AKA Calcutta), India.

VSO names new office manager

Samantha Talbot recently joined the Vermont Symphony Orchestra staff as office manager. She served most recently as marketing coordinator for Spruce Peak at Stowe. Prior to that position, she was an intern in the brand management and market research departments of KSV in Burlington and worked as a volunteer and site coordinator for the Vermont Mozart Festival summer series. Talbot holds B.A. degrees in Business Administration and in English from the University of Vermont.
