Vermont Historical Society presents their annual awards

The Vermont Historical Society presented H. Nicholas Muller III and John J. Duffy with the Richard O. Hathaway award for their book Inventing Ethan Allen.

“It was a difficult decision among six other nominees from around the state,” said Mark Hudson, Vermont Historical Society’s executive director. “This publication exemplifies Dick Hathaway’s dedication to the preservation of Vermont history.”

Fleming Museum of Art receives extraordinary promised gift from Vermont collector, J Brooks Buxton

The University of Vermont’s Fleming Museum of Art has announced their receipt of an extraordinary promised gift of nearly 200 European and American paintings, prints, drawings and photographs from Jericho, Vermont collector, J. Brooks Buxton ‘56. Buxton’s deep and abiding interest in history—global and local—has resulted in a unique and diverse collection.

Throughout his life, Buxton has collected art that represents the locales where his career as an oil executive has taken him: the United Kingdom, North Africa, the Middle East, and Vermont, to which he returned in 2003.

Joan Carter joins the Vermont Arts Council staff

Joan Carter has joined the Vermont Arts Council as director of administration, replacing Elaine DuFresne, who recently retired. Carter brings to the Council a deep background in accounting, financial management, and information technology. She has a bachelor’s degree in accounting and decades of varied experience working in small to large businesses. Previously, she worked as the controller at Spruce Peak Realty for 10 years and has also been employed as an accounting and computer consultant for the City of Burlington and for Youth in Need, a nonprofit youth advocacy group in St.
