NEFCU awards 2017 Nursing Scholarships

New England Federal Credit Union (NEFCU) recently named the three winners of the 2017 NEFCU Nursing Scholarships. Each year, NEFCU’s Nursing Scholarship Program provides three scholarships of $3000 each to qualified applicants. Darien Boerger of Waterbury is a senior at Stowe High School and will be attending the University of Pittsburgh this Fall. Kristina Unikewicz of Essex Junction works for the University of Vermont Medical Center as a Registered Nurse in the operating room and is currently attending Simmons College for her Nurse Practitioner degree.

Norwich University student earns national award to study abroad

Norwich University student David Heinsohn, 21, of Alexandria, Va, has been awarded a Boren Scholarship to study in Taiwan during the 2017-18 academic year. A rising senior (Class of 2018) and member of the Corps of Cadets, Heinsohn is currently pursuing a double degree in International Studies and Chinese (Mandarin) at Norwich University. He will study Mandarin at the Republic of China Military Academy (ROCMA) in Kaohsiung City, where all of his classes will be taught in Mandarin during the fall 2017 semester.

Hanover Co-op announces election results

Members of the Hanover Consumer Cooperative Society, Inc. (Hanover Co-op) returned incumbents Benoit Rosin and Liz Blum, and elected first-time board members Thomas Battles and Ann Shriver Sargent to its board of directors for three-year terms. Don Kreis, a member of the Hanover Co-op Board from 2003 to 2013, earned a one-year term to fill the remaining year in a seat left open by a director’s resignation last year. Term-length for board candidates was determined by the number-of-votes received.

First place TRIO Scholarship awarded to Vermont Tech student

Vermont Technical College student and TRIO participant Kara Polito has received the Vermont Educational Opportunity Program Scholarship. Her nomination came from Sue Polen of the Center for Academic Success. With her narrative, Kara won first place for TRIO Student Support Services and is the first Vermont Tech student to do so. TRIO is a collection of federal programs that aim to help students from disadvantaged backgrounds. As the name implies there were initially three programs under this umbrella, but it has since been expanded.
