Vermont Business Magazine Vermont’s “Trophy Trout” stocking program for 2023 includes nine river sections and 37 lakes and ponds receiving the two-year old trout, some over 18 inches long. Trout harvest season opened this year on April 8 and will continue through October 31. There is no length limit and the daily creel limit is two trout for the Trophy Trout stream.

Vermont Business Magazine Vermont Law and Graduate School’s Environmental Advocacy Clinic, on behalf of the Lake Tarleton Coalition and forest protection group Standing Trees, submitted an objection with the US Forest Service on Monday, seeking reconsideration of the flawed Tarleton Integrated Resource Project (Project) in Grafton County, New Hampshire. The Tarleton Project would authorize nearly 700-acres of commercial logging in and around Lake Tarleton in the towns of Piermont and Warren, including in close proximity to the Appalachian Trail. The objection shows how the Forest Service’s approval of the Project disregards both federal laws and the importance of the lands and waters to local business owners, residents and recreationists, and instead treats one of New Hampshire’s largest, cleanest and least-developed lakes as a woodlot. During an earlier comment period, the Forest Service received over 500 comments on the project, with over 90% in opposition. The objection process is the Forest Service’s last chance to modify the project and avert litigation.

Vermont Business Magazine Vermont Outdoor Guide Association (VOGA) and Doe Camp Nation has announced the return of nationally known survival instructor, MasterClass Wilderness Survival Instructor, Jessie Krebs who will be teaching women's outdoor survival skills for 2 weekends in Monkton, VT in June. Jessie is a former U.S. Air Force SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape) training instructor and one of the few female S.E.R.E. specialists who taught military members how to stay alive and return home if they were shot down behind enemy lines. She is also an "Alone" Season 9 participant.

Vermont Business Magazine In celebration of Earth Day, on Tuesday, April 25, nearly 40 GlobalFoundries employees volunteered at The Farm at Vermont Youth Conservation Corps (VYCC) in Richmond, Vermont. The GF team planted kale and scallions, weeded the strawberries, and got the fields ready with mulch and compost for seeding.

Vermont Business Magazine Burlington School District (BSD) is excited to announce that Debra Beaupre has been named the next principal of Burlington High School (BHS). BSD Superintendent Tom Flanagan recommended Beaupre after a thorough search process, noting that “Ms. Beaupre received overwhelming support from current BHS staff and students, for her strong qualifications and experience, leadership, connection with students, especially those of the Global Majority, willingness to listen, and her genuine personality and sense of humor.” The Burlington Board of School Commissioners unanimously voted to accept Superintendent Flanagan’s recommendation on Tuesday, May 2.

Vermont Business Magazine Senator Peter Welch (D-VT) yesterday joined the Senate Committee on the Judiciary’s hearing on Supreme Court Ethics Reform to call for the creation of a code of conduct for members of the Supreme Court, amidst a series of reports of ethical impropriety among the Justices. Although public confidence in the Supreme Court is at an all-time low, the court has no formal code of conduct. Senator Welch centered his remarks on the importance of rebuilding the public’s trust in the court and protecting its role in our democracy. “We all have different points of view. But what is the problem with a Supreme Court Justice saying, ‘Let’s have a code of conduct that applies to all of us?’”

Vermont Business Magazine VGS (Vermont Gas) is launching a new program to install electric heat pumps in its customers’ homes, providing attractive sales and leasing options so more Vermonters can reduce their carbon footprint and enjoy the benefits of these highly-efficient heating and cooling systems. VGS’s new program is built around a centrally ducted heat pump concept that utilizes existing ductwork in a home. This configuration employs a smart thermostat to integrate a cold climate heat pump with a furnace. The heat pump is set as the primary heating source, while the gas furnace serves as an auxiliary backup system. The smart thermostat toggles between heat sources based upon outdoor temperature and the user’s desired comfort settings.

Vermont Business Magazine Governor Phil Scott and the Department of Environmental Conservation today announced $5.6 million in ARPA funding to help 193 low- to moderate-income Vermont households repair or replace failed or inadequate on-site water or wastewater systems like wells, springs, septic systems, and leach fields in 2022. This 2022 round of the Healthy Homes On-Site funding will help approximately 633 Vermonters – including 146 seniors and 156 children – gain access to safe drinking water and sanitation. To date, they have received approximately 1,200 applications and anticipate even more in the coming months and years. The state estimates that an additional 400 Vermont households will be served over the next two years, providing clean drinking water and proper sanitation for its residents.
