The Vermont State Police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred on Tuesday evening, July 4, 2023, at the Dollar General on Colonial Rd in the town of Fairfax. At about 545 pm, an unknown individual entered the store dressed in black, displayed a firearm, and demanded cash from the clerk. The suspect fled the store with an undisclosed amount of cash. No one was injured. The male was seen driving away in a white utility truck with a ladder rack on the top heading towards RT 128. There was also a female inside the truck.

The Vermont State Police on Tuesday received multiple reports of a tractor trailer unit attempting to drive through Smuggler's Notch. Troopers located the tractor trailer and assisted with backing the truck and trailer out of the Notch. The operator of the vehicle was identified as Byambadorj Avirmed, who told Troopers that he observed all the posted signs but continued anyways. Avirmed was issued a ticket for operating in the Notch. This was the second truck to make its way into Smuggler’s Notch this year.

The Vermont State Police is investigating an apparent drowning that occurred Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at the Bolton Potholes in Bolton. VSP was notified of the incident at 4:29 p.m. and responded to the swimming area. Subsequent investigation revealed that the victim, identified as Samuel Paprin, 20, of Greenwich, Connecticut, had been caught in the rapids while swimming and became unresponsive. 

Vermont Business Magazine A new unpermitted discharge has been reported in Wilmington on July 3, according to the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources. Unpermitted Discharge Incidents are discharges of wastewater, industrial process water, dumping or spills into waters of the State either directly or through Stormwater-only drainage systems or other conveyance. These discharges have been identified and found that they may pose a threat to human health or the environment. This report is auto-filled to show all current incidents that are under review or are working towards a resolution as well as discharges that ended in the previous 30 days. 

Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont State Police is investigating a shooting by the Rutland City Police Department that occurred Monday evening, July 3, 2023, in Rutland. The shooting occurred at about 8:30 pm near the Giorgetti Athletic Complex along Oak Street Extension. Preliminary investigation by the Vermont State Police indicates Rutland City police officers encountered a vehicle occupied by two men, and at least one officer subsequently fired his department-issued handgun. The car then was driven toward the end of Oak Street Extension, where it crashed.

by Timothy McQuiston, Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont Department of Health reported June 28, 2023, that COVID-19 hospitalizations increased by 7 to a statewide total of 18. Total reported cases also increased by 21 to a total of 93. However, COVID-19 activity remains in the "Low" range, according to the VDH. There were 5 COVID-related deaths reported in the last week for a pandemic total of 984 as of June 24 (this is the most recent update). Fatalities have slowed. VDH reported 15 COVID-related deaths in March, 20 in April and 10 in May (the fewest since the summer of 2021) and 8 so far in June.

Vermont Business Magazine Oliver Subaru of Rutland and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) spreads warmth to patients at Rutland Regional Medical Center's Foley Cancer Center as they continue their fight against cancer. As part of the national Subaru Loves to Care initiative, Oliver Subaru of Rutland has teamed up with the upstate New York/Vermont Chapter of LLS to donate more than 80 blankets to the Foley Cancer Center.

Vermont Business Magazine Tenth Crow Creative and Vermont Association of Area Agencies on Aging (V4A) have recently received a Lamplighter Award of Excellence from the New England Society for Healthcare Communications (NESHCo) in the Health Promotion Campaign category for V4A’s COVID-19 vaccine campaigns for older Vermonters. NESHCo’s annual Lamplighter Awards recognize outstanding achievements and campaigns produced in healthcare communications across New England. The 2023 competition totaled 274 entries.

Vermont Business Magazine On Thursday, June 15th, the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board (VHCB) celebrated 35 years of community development, land conservation, and historic preservation initiatives with more than 250 partner organizations and community members in attendance. Since 1987, VHCB’s working partners throughout the state have created 15,000 permanently affordable homes, conserved 447,000 acres of land and 789 farms, and restored 81 historic buildings for community use. To finance those projects, VHCB community partners leveraged $400 million of the State’s investment to raise an additional $2.2 billion from other funding sources.

Vermont Business Magazine The VNA & Hospice of the Southwest Region offers weekly grief support groups in July and August. The groups are facilitated by Lori Rogers, Spiritual Care Coordinator at the VNA & Hospice of the Southwest Region, and Jamie Losikoff-Kent, LCSW and Hospice Volunteer. The Manchester group will meet every Wednesday, beginning July 5 through August 30, from 1-2 pm at the Manchester branch office of the VNA & Hospice of the Southwest Region. The Bennington group will meet every Thursday, beginning July 6 through August 31, from 2:30-3:30 pm at the Bennington Free Library. Group support meetings are free and open to the public.
