DEW Construction Corp. has been selected as the Construction Manager for Chittenden South Supervisory Union's Champlain Valley Union High School Addition and Renovation Project. Work on this project entails a 148,542 square foot renovation of the existing school including a new wood chip-fired heating system, and 63,000 square feet of new construction including space for classrooms, a new library/media center, gymnasium addition, and a new cafeteria and kitchen.
DEW will begin preconstruction services immediately and construction is slated to begin next spring and be completed by summer 2005.
Banwell Architects of Montpelier, Vermont is the Architect. Heading up the project for DEW are Mike Smith, Project Manger, Gary Gibson, Superintendent, Dave Stone, Assistant Superintendent and Scott Carter, Estimator.

Lorraine Jenne has just been named Director of Operations for The Howard Center, with responsibility for human resources, corporate compliance, quality assurance, risk management, and labor relations. Jenne served most recently as Human Resources Director.
John Kamin, M.D., joined The Howard Center for Human Services staff as Staff Psychiatrist of the Adult Behavioral Health Services division, after completing his residency in the Harvard Longwood Psychiatry Residency Program.
Wendy Scanlan has been named Director of the Pine Forest Children’s Center, a program of The Howard Center’s Baird division. Scanlan first joined the Center in 1990 as a teacher. She became a master teacher and then served the past four years as Assistant Director/Curriculum Coordinator.

Two International Business students at Champlain College will join a Vermont Chamber of Commerce trade mission to Asia in mid-October. Laura Herrema and Elizabeth Claflin will travel with a delegation of Vermont legislators and business people for an 11-day trip to Shanghai, China, Hong Kong, and Taipei, Taiwan.
For these students, the internship is providing learning experiences that can’t be gleaned from a textbook. This rare opportunity is supported through a US Department of Education “Business and International Education” grant received by Champlain College. The students have been working with Curtis Picard, Vice President of International Trade at the Chamber, to promote the trip, complete research, and work on the logistics of the trade mission.

The Vermont Manufacturing Extension Center (VMEC) has launched its Fall 2003 – Spring 2004 workshop season. VMEC’s 30 public workshops are located throughout Vermont and cover a wide range of manufacturing topics, including
lean manufacturing, supply chain management, new product development, strategic planning, and industrial marketing. Upon request, throughout the year the Center also holds “on site” workshops at many Vermont manufacturing
plants.
Each of the 13 distinct workshops addresses the unique challenges facing Vermont manufacturers in today’s global economy. Experienced, professional presenters give attendees practical, proven tools and ideas that they can
take back to their companies and immediately begin using.

Charter One Financial, Inc. (NYSE: CF) announced that it would be migrating its consumer and small business online banking applications to Corillian’s Voyager platform.
Charter One also announced that it has formed a new partnership with Cash Edge to integrate account aggregation and bank-to-bank transfer functions into the Corillian product. Charter One has also reaffirmed its partnership with Centerpost to provide voice, email and wireless alerting within the application.

Brattleboro has a lively downtown
filled with bookstores, antique stores, fine restaurants and cafes,
upscale clothing shops, exotic import stores, hair salons and home
furnishings stores. It has a hotel and an art movie theater. But up to
now, it has suffered from its reputation as a town with no parking.
All that is about to change. The new $9.6 million Brattleboro
Transportation Center is getting ready to open in the heart of downtown,
providing over 300 new parking spaces at affordable prices and
facilitating travel for pedestrians, motorists and cyclists.
"By mid-October there will be convenient, safe, affordable,
weatherproof parking 24 hours a day," said Tom Appel, project
manager, at a community briefing of downtown landlords, employees and
residents at the River Garden. "It is expected that the first two levels
will be open for parking on Friday, October 3, in time to accommodate

University of Vermont Extension natural resources specialist Lisa Chase
recently received a grant to study rural recreation and tourism. Partners
in the collaborative study are Roel Boumans of the Gund Institute for
Ecological Economics; Todd Comen of the Institute for Integrated Rural
Tourism; Dick Foster of the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and
Markets; and Bruce Lauber of Cornell University's Department of Natural
Resources.
The “Participatory Modeling of Recreation and Tourism in the Northern
Forest” study received a total of $68,973. It will examine six sites --
two in New York, two in Vermont, and two in New Hampshire -- over a
three-year period. Workshops in each community will focus on how
recreation and tourism are related to the economic, social, and
environmental factors in each area, and how to make that relationship more
harmonious.

A new report issued today by the Office of Advocacy details patterns in small business financing. Drawn from the Federal Reserve’s latest Survey of Small Business Finance, the report features over 400 statistical tables comparing the borrowing patterns of various small business subgroups.
“The data contained in this report is a goldmine for policymakers and researchers,” said Thomas M. Sullivan, Chief Counsel for Advocacy. “Sound public policy choices rely on sound data. This report is part of our on-going commitment to provide sound data about small business to federal, state, and local policy makers. It helps to fill-in the gaps in our knowledge about how different small business sub-groups use financing resources,” he said.
