Brattleboro has a lively downtown
filled with bookstores, antique stores, fine restaurants and cafes,
upscale clothing shops, exotic import stores, hair salons and home
furnishings stores. It has a hotel and an art movie theater. But up to
now, it has suffered from its reputation as a town with no parking.
All that is about to change. The new $9.6 million Brattleboro
Transportation Center is getting ready to open in the heart of downtown,
providing over 300 new parking spaces at affordable prices and
facilitating travel for pedestrians, motorists and cyclists.
"By mid-October there will be convenient, safe, affordable,
weatherproof parking 24 hours a day," said Tom Appel, project
manager, at a community briefing of downtown landlords, employees and
residents at the River Garden. "It is expected that the first two levels
will be open for parking on Friday, October 3, in time to accommodate
University of Vermont Extension natural resources specialist Lisa Chase
recently received a grant to study rural recreation and tourism. Partners
in the collaborative study are Roel Boumans of the Gund Institute for
Ecological Economics; Todd Comen of the Institute for Integrated Rural
Tourism; Dick Foster of the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and
Markets; and Bruce Lauber of Cornell University's Department of Natural
Resources.
The “Participatory Modeling of Recreation and Tourism in the Northern
Forest” study received a total of $68,973. It will examine six sites --
two in New York, two in Vermont, and two in New Hampshire -- over a
three-year period. Workshops in each community will focus on how
recreation and tourism are related to the economic, social, and
environmental factors in each area, and how to make that relationship more
harmonious.
A new report issued today by the Office of Advocacy details patterns in small business financing. Drawn from the Federal Reserve’s latest Survey of Small Business Finance, the report features over 400 statistical tables comparing the borrowing patterns of various small business subgroups.
“The data contained in this report is a goldmine for policymakers and researchers,” said Thomas M. Sullivan, Chief Counsel for Advocacy. “Sound public policy choices rely on sound data. This report is part of our on-going commitment to provide sound data about small business to federal, state, and local policy makers. It helps to fill-in the gaps in our knowledge about how different small business sub-groups use financing resources,” he said.

announced a partnership this week to assist Vermont family businesses with

Washington Electric Cooperative (WEC) announced that it intends to develop a renewable energy project. The Co-op will build a plant that will generate electricity from the landfill gas (LFG) being produced and collected at the state’s largest landfill in Coventry, Vermont. The landfill is owned and operated by New England Waste Services of Vermont (NEWSV), a wholly owned subsidiary of Casella Waste Systems of Rutland.
The project will be a source of long-term, affordable, stable and predictably priced renewable baseload power, and is expected to meet a significant portion of the electricity needs of the Co-op’s member/consumers for up to 30 years. The facility is expected to begin generating in 2005.

The Vermont Credit Union League
Services Corporation, a subsidiary of the Vermont Credit Union League, has

Michael Kraatz has been named Director of Planning and
Permitting. In his new position, he will oversee all aspects of Okemo's
real estate planning and development. Michael came to Okemo in 1985 and
was formerly Manager of Rental/Repair and oversaw Okemo's retail and food
and beverage operations. Michael will also serve as a Division Manager at
Okemo. Michael replaces Dan Petraska, Okemo's VP of Resort Development
and Planning. Dan has been with Tim and Diane Mueller for the past 30
years and will be retiring in the Fall.

Director
