Status of Vermonters Report Tracks Public Health Successes & Challenges
Vermont Celebrates Public Health Week April
7-13 with Real-Life Stories, Events
Montpelier, Vt. — April, 3, 2008. Gov. Jim Douglas and Health Commissioner Sharon
Moffatt, RN, MSN today released The Health
Status of Vermonters — a report by the Vermont Department of
Health that tracks progress on key public health measures related to illness
and disease, clinical preventive services, health insurance, access to medical
care and personal health behaviors.
“Vermont
is rightfully earning its reputation as the healthiest state in the
nation,” said Gov. Douglas. “We’ve come a long way, thanks to
Vermont’s
public health leadership and workforce — and the efforts of many in
government and in our communities. However, we still face challenges as this
new report quantifies.”

Gov. Douglas Urges Congress to ‘Thoroughly’ Investigate
Fuel Prices & Take Action
Montpelier,
Vt. – Governor Jim Douglas
today praised the U.S. Congress for holding hearings on skyrocketing oil
prices, but urged lawmakers to conduct a “real, thorough
investigation.”
Governor Douglas on several occasions has urged the U.S. Congress to begin
a bipartisan investigation of escalating fuel prices. The Governor and a
bipartisan group of 21 of his colleagues had called for a similar investigation
last May. The Governor most recently urged Congress to investigate oil prices
earlier this winter.
“What’s troubling to average Americans is that as the
price of fuel continues to rise, oil companies are making record-setting
profits. I’m pleased the Congress is finally looking into this issue.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 31, 2008) FairPoint Communications, Inc. (NYSE:FRP) today closed its previously announced transaction in which FairPoint merged with Northern New England Spinco Inc. (Spinco), an entity which owned Verizon Communications landline and certain related operations in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. FairPoint is the surviving company in the merger.
As a result of the transaction closing, FairPoint is now the eighth largest telephone company in the United States with operations throughout the country. FairPoint remains committed to enhancing and expanding the communications networks and infrastructures that serve the company's customer base, while ensuring that it maintains an appropriate and serviceable debt level and returns value to shareholders through dividends.

"Our customers consistently tell us that providing reliable power is the
most important thing we do, and in 2007 we had fewer customer hours without
power, despite significant storms hitting our service territory," said Mary
Powell, senior vice president and chief operating officer. "Major
investments in tree-trimming and other system upgrades have had a direct
effect on improving system reliability."
An analysis of the causes of all the outages in Green Mountain Power's
system during 2007 shows that outages caused by tree branches within the
rights-of-way were at the lowest point in five years. Upgrades to the system
and a fast response to the outages meant that the total amount of time
customers were out due to tree branches within the rights-of-way was well
below previous years.

As of March 1, 2008, ownership of Mad River Family Practice, located on Old County Road in Waitsfield, was transferred to Central Vermont Medical Center.
The day to day function of the office will be unchanged. Dr. Fran Cook and Family Nurse Practitioners Susanne Heinzerling and Debbie VanDyke will continue in full time practice, as will as the entire staff. Mad River Family Practice will be utilizing lab, X-ray and supportive services of CVMC more than in the past and CVMC will be assuming management of administrative and billing services.

Roth "T" Tall Named Governor Deane C. Davis Green Up Citizen of the Year 2008
Montpelier: Green Up Vermont named Roth "T" Tall as the Governor Deane C. Davis Green Up Citizen of the year, 2008, with tribute presented at Green Up's recent Annual Awards Banquet.
"T" Tall epitomizes civic mindedness. Without fail, people describe him as: "very public service oriented; very civil minded; willing to serve and help others; amazingly active in his town as well as in the greater picture with Rotary International; no one more civic minded." It is said that "T" just doesnt say "no;" that he is the guy you go to when everyone else says "no" -- he will at least listen and will at least get something going, if not take it on himself. He is said to be first in line to volunteer, whether to pick up Christmas trees or serve on a town board or project.

For the second time in two months, effective April 1, 2008, the Vermont Economic Development Authority (VEDA), will lower its interest rates for commercial financing. VEDAs variable rate for taxable borrowers will drop to 3.5%, and the Authoritys variable rate for tax-exempt borrowers will drop to 3%. In February, 2008, the same rates went from 6.5% to 5%, and from 5.5% to 4.5%, respectively.
"This is VEDA's way of doing our part to help stimulate Vermont's economy," said Jo Bradley, the Authoritys Chief Executive Officer. "VEDA is keeping pace with a lower rate environment that exists throughout the nation, and we believe lowering interest rates again for Vermonts business community is the right move at the right time to help stimulate jobs creation and economic growth."

Copley Hospital Named EMS Hospital of the Year
Morrisville Copley Hospital has been named the 2008 EMS Hospital of the Year by the Vermont Department of Health Office of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Injury Prevention. Denis Barton, head of the Vermont Department of Healths Office of Rural Health and Flex Program, presented the award March 29 during the 20th annual Vermont EMS Conference. Accepting for Copley were: Donna Toohey, RN and Nurse Manager, Emergency Room & Ambulatory Care Unit; Dale Porter, RN; Emergency Medical Technician Tammy Lurvey and Leah Hollenberger, Senior Director Development and Public Relations. The Hospital of the Year award is considered to be a peoples choice award as the winner is selected by their EMS peers. Copley was nominated by services of EMS District #4.

Burlington Emergency & Veterinary Specialists, popularly known to locals as BEVS, has added another 24 hour day, Friday, to its previous schedule. Local veterinarians and pet owners may now avail of services at Vermont's premier veterinary emergency center 24 hours from Thursday 5pm to Tuesday 8am, as well as 5pm to 8am on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The presence of specialists at BEVS' 24/7 facility has prompted the extension of hours due to the transfer of critical cases during the day from local veterinarians throughout Vermont. In most cases, these pets will require monitoring and intensive treatment through the evening or weekend. The presence of an emergency doctor on Fridays will allow veterinarians and their clients the convenience of keeping their pets at the emergency facility after the specialist procedures are done.
