Vermont Business Magazine Weekly unemployment claims last week fell slightly and remain below 500 and well under claims for the same time last year. For the week of March 31, 2018, there were 434 claims, 16 fewer than than they were the previous week, and 106 fewer than they were a year ago. Altogether 5,394 new and continuing claims were filed, a decrease of 493 from a week ago and 856 fewer than a year ago. For most weeks of 2017 and into 2018 claims have been below the year before.

For UI claims last week by industry, Services, which typically accounts for most claims, fell 3 points and accounted for 46 percent of all claims. Manufacturing was up 5 points to 16 percent and Construction was 16 percent of total claims, down 6 points, as the construction season warms back up.
