New unemployment claims dipped further in Vermont and were again under 500 last week. For the week of August 31 , 2013, there were 433 new, regular benefit claims for Unemployment Insurance in Vermont. This is a decrease of 33 from the previous week's total, and 8 fewer than they were a year ago.
Altogether 4,900 new and continuing claims were filed, a decrease of 318 from a week ago and 685 fewer than a year ago. The Department also processed 768 First Tier claims for benefits under Emergency Unemployment Compensation, 2008 (EUC08), 27 fewer than a week ago.
In addition, there were 25 Second Tier claims for benefits processed under the EUC08 program, which is 6 more than the week before. The Tier III program of extended benefits is being discontinued in Vermont as the state's unemployment rate has been under the federal threshold for more than three months.
The total for all programs was 5,702 claims, 335 fewer than last week and 1,502 fewer than the same time last year.
