This is a time to celebrate the last days of good weather with friends and family. Unfortunately, it is also a time when too many people make the decision to get behind the wheel while under the influence of Alcohol, drugs, or a combination of both. As of August 24th, there have been 41 fatal crashes on Vermont's roadways that have caused 45 people to lose their lives.
Vermont Business Magazine A new offering that connects expectant families with doula support services is proving popular due to the value of perinatal services delivered at no cost. The project is made possible by a federally-funded grant in partnership with the Screening, Treatment and Access for Mothers and Perinatal Partners (STAMPP), Central Vermont Medical Center and Washington County Mental Health Services. The project is available to expecting individuals and their partners but closes at the end of September. So far, more than 20 expectant families have enrolled in the unique perinatal project.
Vermont Business Magazine An engineering lab at Dartmouth College has been awarded two grants totaling $1.25 million to conduct planetary science research relating to the geophysics and astrobiology of icy planets in our solar system. The research could lead to clues about the nature of the icy planets' inaccessible interiors and support future space travel to these planets.
Vermont Business Magazine At a press conference Tuesday, Governor Phil Scott and members of his Administration discussed the start of the school year, the latest COVID-19 trends in Vermont, and continued to encourage Vermonters to get vaccinated. For 18 months, so much of our focus has been on the pandemic. But it is critical to remember, long before COVID, and to this day, we are still confronted with the impacts of overdoses and the deaths that follow. Unfortunately, there is no denying that over the last year and a half, overdoses have increased. With all the stresses from COVID, barriers to treatment, businesses closing and the uncertainty of the past 18 months, people with substance use disorder have been impacted significantly."

As of today, the Vermont Department of Health is reporting one more death for 276 statewide, with 104 cases, 28 hospitalized and 8 in the ICU.

Vermont Business Magazine The joint venture partnership of PC Construction (South Burlington, VT) and HJ Russell & Company (Atlanta) announced today that their work on the Atlanta Water Supply Program project recently received two new awards. The project, which was completed during five years with a total investment of $321 million, is the largest water supply project to-date in the State of Georgia. The work converted an existing 400-foot-deep rock quarry to a 2.4-billion-gallon raw water storage system. This system increases the City’s emergency raw water reserve from three days to more than 30 days.

Additionally, Mack will be offering a $3,000 signing bonus to qualified candidates placed at all three of the Company’s Vermont facilities when they both apply and are hired between August 23 and December 31, 2021.
Under the terms of this bonus program, $1,000 will be payable after three, six and 12 months of employment.

Vermont Senate President Pro Tempore Becca Balint issued the following statement regarding a social media incident earlier this week related to a back to school activity at Irasburg Village School: "I was made aware on Sunday of the incident concerning Senator Russ Ingalls and a classroom teacher at the Irasburg Village School. I have spent the last 48 hours gathering information from the teacher, from townspeople, from educators, and from Senator Ingalls. I have taken this situation extremely seriously and have done due diligence to gather the details about what happened. I also met with Senate Secretary John Bloomer to discuss whether Senator Ingalls violated any official Senate Rules by his actions. Although Ingalls has not violated any of our written rules, it is clear that he violated our general principles of decency and professionalism by his conduct on social media."
Vermont Business Magazine South Burlington-based global industrial computer hardware manufacturer and Internet of Things solution provider OnLogic plans to build a new Vermont headquarters, open an office in North Carolina and expand operations in the Netherlands, Malaysia and Taiwan. To accommodate their continued growth, OnLogic's 125,000-square-foot global headquarters will be located in South Burlington's Technology Park. The company has outgrown their current 36,000-square-foot high tech facility in Meadowlands Park, which was previously expanded in 2014. The planned $50 million project will house manufacturing, warehousing, testing facilities and all other business operations.
Vermont Business Magazine The Navy celebrated the commissioning of USS Vermont (SSN 792), the first Block IV Virginia-class submarine to enter service, Saturday, August 28, at Naval Submarine Base New London. “Vermonters have served with valor from the highest mountains to the depths of the ocean,” said Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro, who served as the event’s keynote speaker and was attending his first ship ceremony as secretary.
Vermont Business Magazine Grace Cottage Family Health and Grace Cottage Hospital have both been awarded “Age-Friendly” certifications from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI). In its letter congratulating Grace Cottage for this achievement, IHI called Grace Cottage “a leader in this rapidly growing movement committed to the care of older adults.”
