Grace Cottage recognized as ‘Age-Friendly’

Vermont Business Magazine Grace Cottage Family Health and Grace Cottage Hospital have both been awarded “Age-Friendly” certifications from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI).

In its letter congratulating Grace Cottage for this achievement, IHI called Grace Cottage “a leader in this rapidly growing movement committed to the care of older adults.”

Only three healthcare facilities in Vermont have achieved this designation, and two are at Grace Cottage (the primary care clinic and the inpatient hospital with its ancillary services both qualified separately). Vermont’s other “Age-Friendly” facility is Appletree Bay Primary Care, part of the UVM healthcare network.

Grace Cottage is the state’s smallest hospital, and the UVM Medical Center is the largest.

The IHI’s “Age-Friendly” certification is part of a nationwide initiative to improve health care specifically for older adults. It was organized by IHI and The John A. Hartford Foundation, in partnership with the American Hospital Association and the Catholic Health Association of the U.S.

“Older adults are living and working longer, and our approach recognizes the unique needs of these important members of our community,” says Grace Cottage geriatrician Dr. Ron Vallario. “We are honored to be recognized.”
