by Olga Peters, Vermont Business Magazine Depending on who you ask, Vermont needs anywhere from 3,500 to 7,000 new housing units to meet its immediate needs. Both estimates, however, exceed the amount of new housing built annually in the state. Commissioner Alex Farrell, Department of Housing and Community Development, acknowledged a disparity between the amount of effort the state and communities have put into housing and the amount of new housing coming online. After the 1980s and 1990s, he said Vermont stopped producing housing for various reasons. Some reasons are within the state’s control, and some are not. He said the state can control the regulatory environment that fosters more housing.
Vermont Business Magazine Vermont Agency of Transportation highway and bridge projects scheduled for 2024.
by C.B. Hall, Vermont Business Magazine As construction season gets underway in Vermont, the Agency of Transportation appears to have resolved the most urgent problems created by last July’s floods — undercut roadways, damaged culverts, washed-out roadside slopes and so forth. Less than 8% of the projects being advertised to prospective bidders this year are directly tied to the floods. But Jesse Devlin, VTrans’ highway safety and design program manager, said that ”numerous permanent emergency relief projects” currently in or scheduled for design development will be advertised within the next several years. Several large multiyear road construction projects, meanwhile, continue apace. These include Burlington’s Champlain Parkway, the widening of the I-89 crossing of the Connecticut River at White River Junction, and the revamping of the I-89 interchange with US 2/7 in Colchester.

Online casino review site Lucky Gambler analyzed data from Team USA to find the number of Olympic gold medals won by American athletes in the Summer Olympics, Winter Olympics and Paralympics since the first Olympics in 1896. Each gold medal win was categorized by the birth state of the athletes who won them. The total number of gold medals in each state was weighed against the population to calculate wins per 100,000 residents. The states with the highest rate of gold medals determined the ranking. Vermont ranks top, with 2.63 Olympic gold medals per 100,000 people. The state has a total of 17 gold medals, five silver medals and four bronze medals. Vermont lands the top spot mainly thanks to Sarah Will, an alpine skiing champion with 12 gold medals to her name.
