(MONTPELIER) Citing the sharply rising cost of home heating oil, Lt. Governor Dubie today will call for immediate action at the state level to draft emergency plans to assist Vermonters who are unable to adequately heat their homes this coming winter.
He will also call for action to address the growing cost of delivering home-based services and meals to home-bound elders.

National Life Group CEO Announces Retirement

Montpelier, Vermont (June 10, 2008) - Thomas H. MacLeay announced today that he will retire by year's end as President and Chief Executive Officer of National Life Group(r). MacLeay will remain as Chairman of the Board of the financial services company.

"National Life is strong," said MacLeay, 58. "This is an excellent time to make the transition to new leadership."

MacLeay, a Vermont native who has worked at National Life for 32 years, has served as President of the company for a total of 11 years and CEO and Chairman for the past six years.

"I have accomplished what I set out to do six years ago, which was to strengthen the company's financial foundation, diversify and grow its businesses, and build an executive team superbly qualified to continue to move the organization forward," said MacLeay.

Governor to Sign Health Care Bills

Tomorrow (June 10, 2008), Governor Jim Douglas will visit Milton CAT, a business with
an award-winning worksite wellness program, to sign two health care bills into
law. Governor Douglas will be joined by legislators, advocates, insurance
company representatives and others as he signs H. 887 and S. 283.

H. 887 and S. 283 build on the groundbreaking reforms included in
Health Care Affordability Acts of 2006, including the new Catamount Health
Plans and Governor Douglas forward-thinking Blueprint for
Health, which is helping Vermont lead the nation in efforts to change our health care system
to one focused on preventing illness and complications, rather than reacting to

Safety inspectors take more than 100 vehicles and drivers out of service while issuing more than $45,000 in fines during three-day checkpoint

MONTPELIER - Vermont Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers this week took more than 100 vehicles and drivers out of service and arrested four people during a three-day safety check along the Massachusetts border that ended June 5.

Inspectors checked and weighed 3,696 commercial vehicles, and conducted 373 inspections. As a result, they placed 75 commercial vehicles out of service as well as 36 commercial motor vehicle drivers. Officers also detected a total 933 violations, and issued over $45,000 in fines related to those detected violations.

Legislation
to identify process for inspection of the states nuclear plant

(June 6, 2008) The legislation requiring
the inspection of the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant was be signed into law
today by Governor Jim Douglas. The bill, S 364, provides guidelines for the
steps to be taken in the evaluation of the operating systems within the nuclear
plant in Vernon, Vermont.

The safe and reliable operation of Vermont Yankee remains a top
priority, said Governor Douglas. While there is an existing NRC
process that examines the safety of nuclear facilities, participation by Vermont in this inspection
will significantly enhance the process and provide us an opportunity to make
certain that safety is paramount.
