The Episcopal Diocese of Vermont, Rock Point School, and AllEarth Renewables will announce a partnership in a new 35-panel AllSun Tracker solar installation and invite members of the media to a press briefing about the project on Tuesday, January 17, 2012, at 2:30 pm.
The solar project is the largest in Burlington.
The briefing will be held in the library at Rock Point School, 1 Rock Point Road.
The Rt. Rev. Thomas C. Ely, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Vermont, C.J. Spirito, Head of School at Rock Point School, and Andrew Savage of AllEarth Renewables will be available to discuss the development, operation, and significance of the solar farm, which lies between Rock Point School and the offices of the Episcopal Diocese. A tour of the project will follow.

US Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and US Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) have secured funding to prevent the imminent shutdown of river and lake gauges in the New York-Vermont Lake Champlain basin that proved their worth again last year during spring floods and Tropical Storm Irene.

The White House and Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) announced Friday that Leahy Chief of Staff Ed Pagano will begin work next week as Deputy Assistant to the President and Senate Liaison.
Leahy is the Senate’s second-most-senior member and chairs two major Senate panels, the Judiciary Committee and the Appropriations Committee’s Subcommittee on the State Department and Foreign Operations. Pagano started his public service career as an attorney in Leahy’s office in 1993 and has headed Leahy’s staff since 2005, managing his offices in Washington and Vermont and overseeing Leahy’s work on the Senate Judiciary, Agriculture and Appropriations Committees. He is a graduate of the University of Vermont and also an alumnus of the Catamounts’ basketball team, where he played power forward from 1981 to 1985 (wearing Number 42). He earned his law degree from Fordham Law School.

40 Scholarships Available for Students to Attend Efficiency Vermont’s Better Building by Design Conference
Efficiency Vermont is honoring Vermont Energy Investment Corporation (VEIC) co-founder Blair Hamilton for his visionary leadership in energy efficiency and renewable energy through the creation of 40 student scholarships.
Blair Hamilton, who died in the spring of 2011, was a driving force in creating Efficiency Vermont, the nation’s first energy-efficiency utility. A mentor and innovator in the field of energy efficiency research, policy, design and implementation, Blair helped create similar organizations and initiatives in other states and around the world.

On Thursday, the Senate gave final approval to S.92, a bill that requires manufacturers and distributors of cleaning products to only sell environmentally preferable cleaning products to schools. The bill will now make its way to the Governor’s desk for his signature.
‘This legislation will create safer and healthier learning environments in our schools,’ said Charity Carbine-March, environmental health advocate for Vermont Public Interest Research Group (VPIRG). ‘Children in classrooms across Vermont will soon be breathing easier.’

The Vermont General Fund took a hit last month as both the Personal Income and Corporate tax revenues fell below expectations. Secretary of Administration Jeb Spaulding today released the December 2011 General Fund (GF) revenue results. December is the sixth month of fiscal year (FY) 2012. General Fund revenues totaled $96.47 million for December 2011, and were -$9.70 million or -9.14% below the $106.18 million consensus revenue forecast for the month. Year to date, General Fund revenues were $569.12 million, and +$2.43 million or +0.43% ahead of the target of $566.69 million for FY 2012. Cumulatively, General Fund receipts through December 31, 2011 exceed the prior fiscal year (FY 2011) to date receipts as of December 31, 2010 by +3.16%.

Immediately prior to the Friendly’s restaurant chain emerging from chapter 11 bankruptcy Monday, January 9, its corporate entity closed two more restaurants in Vermont. The Colchester (near Costco) and South Burlington (near University Mall) locations were closed without notice Sunday.
A story in the Quincy (MA) Patriot Ledger said the Wilbraham, MA, based chain closed the restaurants after not being able to renegotiate rents. Friendly’s filed for chapter 11 in October and closed 63 restaurants systemwide at that time. The action Sunday closed another 37, according to patriotledger.com.
The friendlys.com Web site lists six existing restaurants in Vermont: Bennington, Brattleboro, Manchester, Rutland, Springfield and Williston. A Shelburne Road in South Burlington location was previously closed.

There were 1,427 new regular benefit claims for Unemployment Insurance in Vermont last week, as claims subsided somewhat after a spike over the holidays. New claims decreased 638 from the week before and are 87 below last year's total.
Altogether 10,597 new and continuing claims were filed, an increase of 731 from a week ago but 3,473 fewer than a year ago. The Department also processed 1,563 First Tier claims for benefits under Emergency Unemployment Compensation, 2008 (EUC08), 7 more than a week ago. In addition, there were 647 Second Tier claims for benefits processed under the EUC08 program, which is 13 more than the week before. The University of Vermont Presidential Search Committee has identified five finalists for the position of president. John Bramley is the interim president. He took over from Dan Fogel, who resigned last July. The final candidates have been invited to campus for interviews beginning January 19 to become the 26th president of the University of Vermont. According to a university statement, the unanimous consensus of the Search Committee is that the qualifications of these individuals are outstanding and that each has the potential to be an exceptional President.
The final candidates are highly accomplished and successful leaders and scholars in higher education. All have impressive records of achievement in their current and past roles, and all have had to manage very difficult and complex problems and issues at their current institutions, the statement said.

The temporary office on CVMC’s Berlin campus and the satellite office in the Thatcher Brook Inn will both be closed as of Monday, January 23.
