Vermont Business Magazine Attorney General TJDonovan announced that the State of Vermont joined two multi-state actions to force the USDepartment of Energy (DOE) to finalize energy conservation standards for several consumer and commercial products. Efficiency standards are crucial for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and saving money for consumers. The standards apply to items such as ceiling fans, portable air conditioners, walk-in coolers and commercial boilers.

Vermont Business Magazine Senators Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont0 and Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) issued the following statements after the United States carried out a missile strike in Syria in response to the Syrian government’s chemical weapons attack this week.

Vermont Business Magazine Representative Peter Welch (D-VT) and Representative David McKinley (R-WV) this week introduced the Fair Access for Safe and Timely (FAST) Generics Act. The legislation would thwart manipulation of the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) drug safety regulations in order to block the production of generic alternatives to brand name medicines. This would increase consumer access to generic drugs, boost market competition, and ultimately save American consumers money.

“Generic prescription drugs are very often a cost-effective alternative to brand name drugs.Patients, in consultation with their physician, should have a choice where possible,” said Welch. “Our legislation will save consumers billions of dollars by ensuring timely competition in the market and preventing unfair delays for patients seeking more affordable options for their medications.”

Vermont Business Magazine State Treasurer Beth Pearce joined with Governor Phil Scott on Thursday to recognize student achievement in the “Reading is an Investment” program and the “Be Money Wise” financial literacy poster contest. Both programs are administered by the Treasurer’s Office to engage student interest in money management skills

Vermont Business Magazine Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) delivered a shorter version of the speech below on the Senate Floor yesterday, in the run up to today’s votes on the nomination. The cloture motion to shut off further debate failed in a vote of 55 to 45 [60 votes are required for cloture]. Majority Leader McConnell then invoked the so-called “nuclear option” to change the Senate rules on cloture for Supreme Court nominees, so they can be confirmed with simple majority votes and not the current 60-vote threshold. Leahy opposes the nomination and also voted against cloture. A vote of the full Senate on the nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch for the US Supremem Court is expected Friday.

Vermont Business Magazine Twenty entrepreneurs throughout the state have been selected to participate in a free business course starting April 21 at Vermont Technical College in Williston. Emerging Leaders is a Small Business Administration training program specifically tailored for entrepreneurs looking to grow their small businesses. The program includes approximately 100 hours of classroom time, connects small business owners with a network of industry experts and peers, and assists with the creation of a three-year strategic growth action plan.

Vermont Business Magazine Attorney General Thomas JDonovan, Jr, joined a coalition of 16 Attorneys General in filing an amicus brief with the USCourt of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, challenging an Ohio state law that would defund Planned Parenthood and other health service providers that perform or promote abortions. The attorneys general argue that the Ohio law violates the First Amendment and Due Process Clause. The law unconstitutionally prohibits state funding of health care providers that perform abortions. This infringes on plaintiffs’ right to free speech, plaintiffs’ right to provide access to abortion services, and their clients’ right to receive such services.

Attorney General Donovan said: “Women have a constitutional right to make their own healthcare decisions. Health care providers should not be forced to choose between honoring women’s constitutional rights and continuing to provide other essential health services.”

Vermont Business Magazine The Luxembourg-based owner of Vermont's Keurig Green Mountain has added another major US food brand to its portfolio with a $7.5 billion acquisition of Panera Bread Company. Panera (NASDAQ: PNRA) and JAB Holding Company announced Wednesday that the companies have entered into a definitive merger agreement under which JAB will acquire St Louis-based Panera for $315 per share in cash, including the assumption of approximately $340 million of net debt. JAB bought Keurig just over a year ago for $13.9 billion. JAB also has controlling stakes in Krispy Kreme Doughnuts and Peet's Coffee & Tea. JAB also owns a large stake in Jimmy Choo.

Vermont Business Magazine Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) joined Senator Edward J Markey (D-Mass) and other Senate Democrats in sending a letter Wednesday querying the nation’s largest broadband internet providers on their rules to protect the privacy and security of their subscribers. Their letter comes two days after President Donald Trump signed a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution formally rescinding the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC’s) broadband privacy rules, which required broadband providers to get consent before sharing their subscribers’ sensitive information and adopt reasonable data security protections. Without these broadband privacy rules in place, the senators contend, broadband providers can use, share, and sell Americans’ sensitive information about their health, finances, and families without permission.
