​Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont Downtown Development Board allocated over $600,000 in grants to improve eight downtown areas. Grants will support sidewalk improvements in Randolph, St Albans, and Newport; expand Comtu Falls Park in Springfield; provide wayfinding signs in Montpelier and Winooski; and enhance the rail station in Middlebury.

Vermont Business Magazine Casella Waste Systems, Inc (NASDAQ: CWST), a regional solid waste, recycling and resource management services company, reported after markets closed on Tuesday that its financial results for the three month period ended March 31, 2019. Shares spiked in early trading Wednesday before settling about where they previously finished at $37.27. Shares are trading near their 52-week high ($23.38 - $39.31).

Vermont Business Magazine The Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Vermont Convention Bureau, and the Greater Burlington Industrial Corporation (GBIC) announced Monday that they will host the Fourteenth Annual Taste of Vermont Reception in Washington, DC, with honored guest Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont), on Thursday, May 9, 2019. The annual event has become well known throughout the Capital Region for its dynamic showcase of Vermont products.  More than 60 Vermont businesses will be represented at the reception, and many are traveling to Washington for this special event. Representatives of Vermont food and beverage makers will have the opportunity to greet Members of Congress, food writers and policy makers from federal agencies and others in an effort to bring more business to Vermont.

Vermont Business Magazine The National Academy of Sciences has announced the election of Mark Nelson, PhD, University Distinguished Professor and Chair of Pharmacology at the University of Vermont, as a member, in recognition of his distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Nelson joins 100 new members and 25 foreign associates elected April 30, 2019 to the National Academy of Sciences.

Vermont Business Magazine US Senator Bernie Sanders issued the following statement on President Trump's Yucca Mountain nuclear waste storage proposal: “The proposal by President Trump and Republicans in Congress to send our nuclear waste to Yucca Mountain would be a geological, environmental, and social disaster. The site is located less than 100 miles from Las Vegas and sits atop an aquifer in a seismically active area. Nevada’s entire congressional delegation, governor, the Western Shoshone Native American tribes and two-thirds of Nevadans oppose a Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository..."

Vermont Business Magazine The Energy Action Network (EAN) today released a major new report summarizing what Vermont can learn from the “Cap and Invest” approach that has been successfully used by Quebec, California, and nine northeastern states to reduce climate pollution while helping to grow local economies. A “Cap and Invest” system has been in use since 2009 in Vermont, along with eight other northeastern states participating in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), to reduce pollution from the electric sector. Unlike some other states and provinces, however, Vermont has not yet applied the “Cap and Invest” framework to fossil fuel pollution outside of the electric sector.

Vermont Business Magazine Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) today announced the 10 states with the fastest-growing small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) selling in Amazon’s stores. Vermont ranked 8th fastest. The report examined year-over-year sales growth of businesses selling in Amazon’s stores across all 50 states and found that SMBs in Mississippi are growing the fastest, with businesses in Nebraska, Maine, Texas, and Indiana rounding out the top five. Third-party gross physical merchandise sales – primarily comprised of SMBs selling in Amazon stores – surpassed $160 billion in 2018 and make up more than half of the units sold in Amazon’s stores.

Vermont State Police On April 30, 2019 at approximately 1:00 pm a 911 call came in from the Administrative offices of Bennington College reporting a fire in the building. The staff was alerted to the fire by a contractor that was performing work on the outside of the building. At that time the North Bennington Fire Department was alerted and responded to the scene. Due to the amount of smoke and fire upon arrival additional assistance was requested and members of the following departments responded: Bennington FD, Shaftsbury FD, Bennington Rural FD, Hoosick Falls NY FD and North Hoosick Falls NY FD. Due to their efforts along with Bennington College Security everyone was safely evacuated and they were able to prevent extensive damage or spread of the fire. No injuries were reported.

Vermont Buisness Magazine Representative Peter Welch (D-Vermont) joined a bipartisan group of House and Senate members yesterday in introducing legislation to stop brand name drug company abuse of the drug approval process in order to block or slow more affordable generic drugs from coming to market. The Stop Significant and Time-wasting Abuse Limiting Legitimate Innovation of New Generics (Stop STALLING) Act would curb the common brand company practice of filing sham “citizen petitions” during the drug approval process that masquerade as public comments.
