Vermont Business Magazine Foodworks, the Groundworks-run community resource in Brattleboro, increased its storage capacity while transforming the shopping experience at their new Canal Street location where shoppers are invited to pick up the food they need for free. Food Connects visited the location last month to participate in a trauma and food focused community of practice with a group of Groundworks staff. The group was formed as a result of the Food and Trauma Training Food Connects put on last spring, in collaboration with Equity Solutions, and their takeaways from the training are present throughout the new community resource.

Vermont Business Magazine In a brief filed on Monday, October 14, the Attorney General’s Office asked the Vermont Supreme Court to uphold Vermont’s recently enacted large-capacity magazine ban, 13 VSA § 4021. A coalition of 17 states and the District of Columbia, the Giffords Law Center, and Everytown for Gun Safety also filed amicus curiae briefs yesterday at the Supreme Court in support of Vermont’s magazine ban.

Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont Lake Monsters have won the Vincent McNamara Outstanding Club Award, presented annually to a team in the New York-Penn League that best exemplifies the exceptional standards of the complete baseball franchise, including the following areas: contributions to the baseball industry, contributions to the community, long-term franchise stability, financial success of the operation, and the promotion of the baseball industry. This is the first time that the Lake Monsters have won this award, and they are now up for the John H Johnson President’s Trophy, recognizing the top team in Minor League Baseball.

Vermont Business Magazine According to environmental activists, global carbon emissions must be halved in the next decade to avoid serious impacts from global heating, but they are still rising, even in Vermont. On a national level, some US states have seen greater improvements in reducing carbon emissions and increasing renewable output. To find the states leading the way on renewable energy, SmartAsset analyzed seven metrics including the five-year change in CO2 emissions, renewable energy as a percent of total energy production and the number of policies and incentives that support renewable energy and energy efficiency. Vermont ranked 14th on the SmartAsset list.

Vermont Business Magazine Every year the New England Newspaper and Press Association recognizes the most outstanding journalism in the region with its “Publick Occurrences” awards. Seven Days, Vermont’s free, independent newsweekly, won two — of 16 — at NENPA’s annual New England Newspaper Conference in Worcester, Mass, last week.
The judges selected “Give and Take,” the paper’s five-week exploration of Vermont’s nonprofit economy, for examining “every aspect of an important, and growing, sector in the state of Vermont,” according to the program writeup. “Seven Days was able to make the series compelling and even led to an embezzlement charge in the fundraising arena.”
The second award went to Seven Days and reporter Kate O’Neill for the series “Hooked: Stories and Solutions From Vermont’s Opioid Crisis.”

Vermont Business Magazine Technology Park Partners signed an agreement with South Ridge Solar Park, LLC to utilize clean renewable solar energy from their recently developed 500kw solar array in Middlebury, VT, which started producing electricity on 9/27/19.
Technology Park is offsetting the majority of their electricity usage at two of their buildings through a group net metering agreement. The buildings at Technology Park that are now utilizing solar are; 124 Technology Park Way and 55 Community Drive in South Burlington, VT.

Vermont Business Magazine Governor Phil Scott today signed a proclamation declaring October to be Independent Country Store Month in Vermont, recognizing how important the state’s country stores are to the cultural, economic and social lives of Vermonters. Scott joined the Vermont Retail and Grocers Association and members of the Vermont Alliance of Independent Country stores today at The Village Grocery and Deli in Waitsfield to sign the proclamation.

Vermont State Police On 10/15/2019 at approximately 0838 hours, the Vermont State Police received a call of a three vehicle crash in the town of Lowell at the intersection of VT Route 58 and VT Route 100. Initial investigation revealed vehicle 1 was travelling on Hazen's Notch road headed towards VT Route 58. Vehicle 1 crossed the intersection of VT Route 100 where it was struck by vehicle 2, which was travelling northbound on VT Route 100.
Upon impact, vehicle 1 collided into vehicle 3 and vehicle 2 travelled off the travelled portion of the road. The operator of vehicle 2, Craig Sears, was unconscious when EMS arrived on scene and was transported to North Country Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact the Vermont State Police Derby Barracks.
