Vermont Business Magazine On Tuesday, October 26 social activists and co-founders of Ben & Jerry’s, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, endorsed Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor Molly Gray.

In their co-endorsement, Cohen and Greenfield said, "Molly knows, as we do, that we need statewide leadership that understands the importance of local, resilient food systems and bold climate action. Vermont Business Magazine Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) issued the following statement criticizing the Republican-controlled Senate’s confirmation of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court on Monday: “Tonight’s vote to confirm Amy Coney Barrett as a Supreme Court justice is a disgrace, not only because of what she will do when she gets on the bench, but because of the entire process, which was pushed through with extraordinary hypocrisy by Senate Republicans in the last days of a president’s term."

Vermont Business Magazine The Born to Run Foundation will present its 10th prosthesis donation, a running blade, to amputee David Hiler of Brattleboro, Vermont, on Thursday, November 5, at 3:00pm at the outdoor waterfront Bier Garten at Whetstone Station Restaurant and Brewery in Brattleboro. At the event, Hiler and The Born to Run Foundation will announce the creation of a special-label craft brew, RUN, that will support the Foundation’s mission of providing athletic prostheses to amputees to help them lead active lives.

Vermont Business Magazine The Upper Valley MedTech Collaborative held a Pitch Night on October 22, 2020 featuring six medical technology companies located in the Upper Valley region of New Hampshire. These companies have all developed new technologies for medical device or diagnostic healthcare solutions. The event was moderated by Daniella Reichstetter, executive director of the Tuck School of Business Center for Entrepreneurship at Dartmouth College. Judging the competition was Jenny Barba, BioVentures Investors, Ross Jaffe, Versant Ventures, and Laura Rippy, Green D Ventures.

Vermont Business Magazine Central Vermont Home Health & Hospice (CVHHH) is hosting a fundraising campaign and online auction to raise money for its telehealth program. The campaign is being held in lieu of Seasons of Life Fashion Show, Dinner & Live Auction, CVHHH’s largest annual fundraiser and event, which was canceled because of COVID-19.

Vermont Business Magazine For the second year in a row, Vermont Electric Co-op has received a prestigious wellness award from the insurance company Cigna. VEC was one of two companies in Cigna’s national book of business with fewer than 500 employees to receive the annual Cigna Well-Being Award. In making the award, Cigna – VEC’s health insurance partner – found that VEC demonstrates a strong commitment to improving the well-being of employees through a workplace wellness program. The company said VEC’s program was led by “a robust wellness committee with good representation, leadership support and engagement.”

Vermont Business Magazine An inmate at Northwest State Correctional Facility in St Albans assaulted a correctional officer on Thursday, October 22. Other inmates in the unit immediately came to the officer’s aid and stopped the assault. Other officers responded to the unit within seconds. The officer was taken to the hospital and released with a concussion and bruises. The inmate was transferred to another facility. At this time, we are withholding the names of the corrections officer and inmate until an investigation is completed.

There have been no deaths from the novel coronavirus since early August, which are holding at 58. Vermont Business Magazine Today Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos took further steps to protect the health of Vermont voters by issuing an addendum to his First Statewide Elections Directive. Measures in the addendum include new procedures regarding poll watchers, under the statutory process by which formal challenges to voters may be issued at the polls, and the process by which voters who do not bring the ballot they were mailed to the polls may obtain a ballot to exercise their right to vote. The directive and addendum can be found on the Secretary of State’s website.

by Timothy McQuiston, Vermont Business Magazine University of Vermont President Suresh Garimella today announced his proposal to keep tuition frozen at current levels for a third year. He also proposed holding room & board at the current level, cutting the comprehensive fee and pushing ahead with a $150 million campaign to increase scholarship opportunities. Trustees would need to approve Garimella's tuition, room & board and fees plan when they meet next spring.

Vermont Business Magazine ANEW Place today announced the purchase of the Champlain Inn at 165 Shelburne Road, and its plans to transform the space to provide temporary housing for those in our community who are experiencing homelessness. The Inn will fill the void left by the closing of the low-barrier shelter on South Winooski Ave, and realize the goal of establishing a year-round low-barrier option in Burlington. The City actively worked to support ANEW Place’s efforts through technical assistance, an emergency resolution, and funding for ongoing operations, and by fully backing and advocating for COVID-emergency funds to be used for this project. At the Inn, there will be space for up to 50 people experiencing homelessness to access shelter in a way that is COVID-safe and available throughout the year. ANEW Place will provide Inn guests with onsite services, including case managers and assistance with finding permanent housing.
