Vermont Business Magazine Watertown NY-based United Neighbors Federal Credit Union’s Board of Directors voted to move forward with a merger with SeaComm Federal Credit Union, based in Massena, NY, with an office in South Burlington. The United Neighbor’s members approved the merger at a special meeting held on March 30, 2021. The $4.5 million in assets credit union has one location on Coffeen Street in the City and serves all of Jefferson County, NY. SeaComm with $720 million in assets, 50,000 members and eight retail branch locations, serves St Lawrence, Franklin, Essex and Clinton Counties, NY, and Grand Isle, Franklin and Chittenden Counties in Vermont.

Vermont Business Magazine The state is opening up vaccinations this week to two more groups. The first change is that parents or primary caregivers who are caring for children with certain high-risk conditions will be eligible for vaccination starting tomorrow (Wednesday, March 31). The second change is for Vermonters who are Black, Indigenous and people of color. Beginning Thursday (April 1), ALL members of the Vermont BIPOC community 16 years of age and older – as well as their family members – will now be eligible for vaccination.

Vermont Business Magazine Norwich University Applied Research Institutes (NUARI) has been awarded a three-year $2.9 million contract from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) to expand the Distributed Environment for Critical Infrastructure Decision-Making Exercises (DECIDE) cyber training platform. DECIDE was initially developed in tandem with and transitioned to the financial services sector; this new effort will build similar simulation-based scenarios and exercises specific to the transportation sector.

Vermont Business Magazine The University of Vermont’s Larner College of Medicine was recognized for its strength in educating future physicians in primary care and rural care in the 2022 U.S. News and World Report Best Graduate Schools rankings, released today. The Larner College of Medicine was ranked 24th for medical education in primary care – up from 43rd in the 2021 Best Graduate Schools rankings – and tied at this rank with Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine, and University of Hawaii-Manoa Burns School of Medicine.

Vermont Business Magazine The White River Junction Veterans Affairs (VA) Healthcare System and the Vermont National Guard continue their partnership for the COVID-19 vaccine roll-out. On April 16th the White River Junction VA will be administering first doses of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine at the Westminster Armory. This clinic will be a scheduled appointments only clinic. The Westminster Armory is centrally located between the Brattleboro, Vermont and the Keene, New Hampshire VA outpatient clinics which is why the facility is a perfect choice for the next collaborative effort for the Vermont National Guard and White River Junction VA.

Vermont Business Magazine The Rotary Club of Middlebury has announced a $10,000 donation to Kick Start Middlebury, a pilot program spearheaded by the Better Middlebury Partnership (BMP) and other community organizations aimed at attracting new businesses to Middlebury. Launched in March, the Kick Start Middlebury program is a business recruitment tool that offers cash and business support as an incentive to open or relocate a business in Middlebury. The packages are valued at more than $15,000 and will be available to businesses chosen by an independent panel of stakeholders comprised of local business owners, community members and economic development organizations.

Vermont Business Magazine Today the Senate Rules committee met to take the next steps on two proposed amendments to the Vermont Constitution. The Constitution requires that, following the initial adoption of proposed changes, in the next legislative biennium a new legislature must concur with the change in order for it to move forward. In the last biennium, the legislature passed two proposed constitutional amendments: Proposal 2 seeks to clarify that slavery and indentured servitude in any form are prohibited; Proposal 5 seeks to ensure the personal reproductive liberty of every Vermonter.

Vermont Business Magazine The Patient Safety Movement Foundation presented The University of Vermont Medical Center with the Foundation’s 5-Star Hospital award for making commitments in alignment with the Patient Safety Movement Foundation’s evidence-based Actionable Patient Safety Solutions (APSS). The APSS address patient safety challenges that hospitals face daily and offer solutions designed to help hospitals eliminate preventable harm or death.

Vermont Business Magazine Several weeks ago GMP unveiled its pioneering back-up power system at the Vermont State House, designed to keep critical systems running during an outage. The Samsung Mega E2 battery system in the basement got its first chance at proving its capabilities when the State House power kicked off last Friday due to a major storm. The backup system performed successfully, powering the critical building safety systems selected by the state to be tied to the auxiliary power – systems like fire suppression pumps, and elevators.
