Growers expect to harvest 160,000 acres of hay, down 4% from last year. Other hay is estimated at 145,000 acres, down 3% from 2020. Alfalfa hay is estimated at 15,000 acres, down 12% from the previous year.

Vermont State Police On Saturday morning, at approximately 0338 hours, State Police responded to a single vehicle crash located on Route 7, Charlotte. Assisting agencies included Charlotte Fire Department, Charlotte Rescue, and the Williston Police Department. The sole occupant of the vehicle, the operator was transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center by ambulance where he was pronounced deceased. The operator was identified as Gregory Ouellette.

by Timothy McQuiston, Vermont Business Magazine Today, Mayor Miro Weinberger announced that following two days of mediation, the City of Burlington, 100 Bank LLC (Redstone), and BTC Mall Associates LLC have reached a global settlement where all suits and appeals already have been or will be dropped, clearing a path for the major mixed-used CityPlace development and reconnected streets to move forward, and releasing all Burlington Development Review Board members and city employees from any claim of inappropriate action. 100 Bank will get $400,000 in the settlement.

by Timothy McQuiston, Vermont Business Magazine The seasonally-adjusted statewide unemployment rate for June 2021 was 3.1 percent. This reflects an increase of one-tenth of one percent from last month’s revised estimate. Vermont now ranks sixth lowest in the nation, with New Hampshire third lowest at 2.9 percent and Nebraska still first at 2.5 percent. New Mexico and Connecticut are highest at 7.9 percent. The US rate was 5.9 percent.

Vermont Business Magazine In support of our State Partnership Program, Soldiers and Airmen of the Vermont National Guard are traveling to Senegal for two weeks to participate in a medical exercise.

18 medical professionals with the Vermont National Guard will travel to St. Louis, Senegal. They will work side-by-side with Senegalese counterparts to support and build relationships in both military and civilian environments.

"Participating in partnership exercises like this benefit the Vermont National Guard by placing them in a forward environment," said Lt. Col Chris Gookin, deputy state surgeon, Vermont National Guard. “It also provides staff members the opportunity to work in more austere conditions, to push them outside of their comfort zone, and to build relationships with their Senegalese health care partners.”

The Vermont National Guard has supported multiple medical exercises across Senegal, most recently in Kolda in 2019.

Public Assets Institute Vermont should celebrate the recent announcement that the gap in earnings between men and women was the smallest in the country in 2019. According to a study by the National Women’s Law Center, the typical female Vermont worker earned about 91 cents for every $1 earned by the typical male worker. The gap closed, in part, because median earnings for women working full time year round rose 5.6 percent from the previous year. The bad news was that median earnings for men fell a little more than 1 percent.
