Vermont Business Magazine A local child from Burlington has been chosen to represent the University of Vermont Children’s Hospital for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals’ Champions program in 2022. Mariella Desjardin, 10, has been a patient at the UVM Children’s Hospital for most of her life. When she was 6 months old, it was determined that Mariella only had 40 percent kidney function. She is now awaiting a kidney transplant. Through her journey with UVM Children’s Hospital she has had many hospital stays, countless blood draws and scans, multiple feeding tubes and surgeries. Mariella and her family lovingly refer to her scars as her “roadmap.”

In Vermont, cases have increased 16 percent in the last week. The United Kingdom is reporting another new Omicron variant called XE that is a recombinant form (one or more people contracted two different variants to form a new subvariant). There have been fewer than 1,000 cases confirmed so far and its transmissibility is not known yet.

Vermont Business Magazine Thanks to a grant from the Melissa Andrews Trust in Barre, Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital (NVRH) has purchased a Volara airway clearance system to better meet its patient respiratory care needs. Patients with respiratory or neuromuscular conditions such as COVID, COPD, cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy often require medical help to clear their airway by expanding the lungs and loosening mucus so they can breathe more freely. If patients are unable to clear their airway, reduced oxygen flow could result in lung infections and further damage, leading to respiratory failure.

Throughout our Nation’s history, only 115 people have served on the Supreme Court. Until now, only five of them were women. Only two of them have been Black. And none of them has been a Black woman. Vermont Business Magazine Gasoline prices fell 5 cents a gallon this week in Vermont to an average of $4.15 per gallon according to Gas Buddy. Average US prices fell 8 cents to $4.14. Gas prices in Vermont are down 2 cents from a month ago and up $1.38 from this time last year.
