Vermont Business Magazine Guns are the leading cause of death for children in the United States. Thirteen children die from guns every day. To encourage parents, grandparents, families and community members to take action by asking about gun safety, the University of Vermont Health Network and University of Vermont Children’s Hospital join thousands of hospitals, health systems, American Hospital Association, Children’s Hospital Association and The Catholic Health Association of the U.S. in a nationwide public awareness and education campaign that encourages parents to ask if there are unsecured guns in the houses of their children’s friends.

Vermont Business Magazine Saint Michael’s College will host a senior staff attorney from the Innocence Project, a national nonprofit focused on exonerating people who have been wrongfully convicted and transforming the systems responsible for unjust incarceration. Jane Pucher will speak during an event on Monday, October 17 titled “The Role of Innocence in Criminal Legal Reform.” Her talk is free and open to the public, and it is being put on by the College’s Criminology Department.  Pucher will speak about her path to the Innocence Project, where she started work in 2016, and some of the cases she and her colleagues have undertaken. Pucher takes on post-conviction cases across the U.S. for people seeking access to DNA testing and relief from wrongful convictions.

VermontBiz Due to high patient volumes at UVM Medical Center’s main campus Emergency Department, patients with non-emergent medical needs are being encouraged to consider seeking care at UVM Medical Center’s Urgent Care Clinic on College Parkway or to contact their primary care physician for advice.

The Emergency Department was under pressure Friday as a large number of patients – many of whom were experiencing higher levels of medical need – sought care. A regional hospital bed shortage is also impacting health care organizations in Vermont, New York and New Hampshire, and has prompted some organizations to restrict or temporarily stop accepting medical transfers to inpatient care units.

Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont Department of Health reported October 12 that COVID-19 cases fell slightly, as hospitalizations increased. COVID-19 infections are still considered "Low." Total cases fell by 15 to 623. Hospitalizations increased by 3 to 48 and have been edging up over the last few weeks (from a low of 30). There are 6 COVID-related fatalities so far in October, for a pandemic total of 732.

Vermont Business Magazine In 1822, Vermont physician John Pomeroy, medical educator Nathan Smith and others organized the first official series of lectures at what would later be called the College of Medicine at the University of Vermont, and in 1823 UVM produced its first graduates to earn a medical degree. Now, 200 years later, UVM’s newest medical students are poised to celebrate a historic milestone in their quest to become physicians – receiving their first white coats. The UVM Larner College of Medicine medical Class of 2026’s White Coat Ceremony takes place Friday, October 14, 2022, at 1 p.m. at Ira Allen Chapel on the UVM campus.

Vermont Business Magazine Superintendent Tom Flanagan announced Thursday that the Burlington School District is planning to sue Monsanto for its role in manufacturing PCBs, which led to the closing of Burlington High School. BHS is temporarily located at the former Macy's in downtown Burlington. A bond request for $165 million is on the November ballot, which would mostly fund the demolition of the current facility in the New North End and the building of a new school and technical center at the same location.

Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont State Police, through extensive investigation involving detectives and cold-case specialists over more than 33 years, has identified a suspect in the 1989 double killing of George and Catherine Peacock of Danby. Thursday morning, detectives with the Vermont State Police Major Crime Unit, with the assistance of the New York State Police, arrested Michael Anthony Louise, 79, at his home in Syracuse, New York, on an arrest warrant for two counts of second-degree murder. Louise is jailed in New York pending extradition proceedings to Vermont, where he will face arraignment upon his return. George Peacock, 76, and Catherine Peacock, 73, were found dead Sept 17, 1989, by a neighbor inside their home on US Route 7 in Danby.
