"Unbridled Enthusiasm" for Everything Equine
Horses big and small featured at Exposition's Horse Show
Horses big and small will be the focus this weekend at Everything Equine - one of New Englands largest equine educational events.
Everything Equine and Horses 2008 show runs Saturday and Sunday (April 26-27) at Champlain Valley Expositions Robert E. Miller Expo Centre. The annual show, spotlights the impact horse owners have on the state's economy and the many ways horses are used from sport to work.
This year's theme, Unbridled Enthusiasm captures the spirit of the popular show which is part educational event, part consumer trade show and part social get-together for New England, New York and Canadian horse lovers.

Vermont Golf Association State Day Tournaments Slated for
Rutland and Vermont National Country Clubs
(Rutland, VT) - The Vermont Golf Association will hold one-day State Day Tournaments at Rutland and Vermont National Country Clubs during the week of May 5. Rutland Country Club (www.rutlandcountryclub.com) will take place on Tuesday, May 6 while Vermont National Country Club (www.vermontnational.com) State Day will compete on Thursday, May 8.
State Days formats are 18 holes, stroke play for low gross and net scores. The tournament is played in three flights determined by GHIN handicap (0-10, 11-16, and 17-36). Any amateur golfer with a current GHIN handicap (and card) is eligible to participate.

Vermont Legislative Council Announces New Director and Chief Council
(April 17) The Vermont Legislative Council has announced that Emily
Bergquist will become the new Director and Chief Counsel of the
Legislative Council on July 1, 2008. Bergquist was selected
following a national search to lead the Office of the Legislative
Council, which assists the legislature in drafting bills, providing
research and analysis of legislative and policy issues, and supporting
legislative committee work.
"The Vermont legislature sought a leader with a deep appreciation and
knowledge of the institution, and the vision and readiness to meet the
challenges we face in a changing world," said House Speaker Gaye
Symington. Ms. Berquist has all of these qualities and I look
forward to working with her as she assumes her new position.

Gov. Douglas Announces
Achievement Awards and $1.6 Million in Community Development Grants
Six
municipalities honored for outstanding community development projects
MONTPELIER, Vt. — (April 15, 2008) Governor Jim Douglas on has announced the award
of $1.6 million in community development grants to six communities that will provide
affordable housing, preserve jobs, and create shelter and housing for victims
of domestic violence.
The largest Vermont Community Development Program award –
$500,000 – will help the Vermont Tubbs furniture factory in Brandon continue its recovery and preserve 87 jobs in Brandon by providing
needed capital.
“This grant to the town of Brandon
will be loaned to Vermont Tubbs and will allow them to continue their
turnaround,” the Governor said. “This is an investment in a company
and jobs that are critical to Rutland
County.”

UVM FACULTY TO ASSUME LEADERSHIP ROLES AT PEDIATRICS JOURNAL
BURLINGTON, Vt. - Three members of the University of Vermont (UVM) College of Medicine department of pediatrics will serve in national editorial leadership roles as part of an upcoming change at Pediatrics, the peer-reviewed journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and preeminent journal in the world in its field.

Douglas Administration to
Reduce State Employee Travel
Limits will save about $1 Million
Montpelier,
Vt. – (April 12, 2008) The Douglas
administration Friday notified state managers that effective immediately all
out of state travel requiring overnight stays must be approved by the Secretary
of Administration. This authority had previously been delegated to most
agency and department heads
“Our ultimate goal is to reduce out of state travel by at least
25 percent between now and July 1, 2009. We expect this to save nearly $1
million dollars,” said Secretary of Administration Michael Smith.
“The Governor has asked us to be sure the executive branch of
state government is taking responsible steps to reduce expenses and be certain
that every taxpayer dollar is being invested in programs to protect the most
vulnerable or encourage economic growth,” Smith said.

WASHINGTON (Thursday, April 10) The U.S. Senate has passed legislation authored by Vermont's two U.S. Senators Patrick Leahy (D) and Bernie Sanders (I) that would bring nearly $20 million in emergency relief to Vermont's neighborhoods and communities, to quickly redevelop and resell or rent abandoned and foreclosed homes and help stabilize home values, rents and local economies.
