Vermont Business Magazine The Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity (CVOEO) is thrilled to announce the 2019 Crystal Family New Hope Award Recipients. This year’s two awards of $500 will be granted to Gita Dhakal, a Community Ambassador in CVOEO’s Financial Futures Program, and Lulé Aden, Program Coordinator for Leadership & Social Change at the University of Vermont. The awards will be presented at festivities to be held at the Community Room, City Market, 207 Flynn Avenue in Burlington on November 20th at 5 pm. The public is invited.

Vermont Business Magazine Once again, the University of Vermont ranks among the Top Green Schools, according to the Princeton Review, coming in at No. 4.

The Princeton Review’s annual guide profiles 413 colleges with strong commitments to green practices and programs, all “outstanding institutions for students seeking to study and live at a green college,” says Rob Franek, The Princeton Review’s Editor-in-Chief. The ranking looks at criteria including academic offerings and initiatives, campus policies and practices, and green-career preparation for students.

Vermont Business Magazine Vermonters set a record on the 18^th nationwide Prescription Drug Take Back Day this past Saturday, turning in more than 3.5 tons of unused, unwanted and expired medication at over 60 collection sites throughout the state. The 6,734 pounds of collected medication marks the highest total in Vermont of the eight Take Back Days since fall 2015 and it was the first year that e‐cigarette and other vaping devices could also be turned in.

“We know the availability of unused prescriptions in the medicine cabinets of friends or relatives can lead to substance misuse for some Vermonters,” said Governor Phil Scott. “One of the keys to prevention is taking unused drugs out of the equation, and I’m grateful to all the Vermonters who continue to assist in this effort.”

by Rob Roper When the gavel fell on the 2019 legislative session with the house and senate deadlocked over the $15 minimum wage and a Paid Family Leave program, most of us thought those two issues would be front and center this January when the legislature reconvenes. But it doesn’t appear that Vermont’s highly vocal climate change activists will allow that to be the case. They want a carbon tax, and they want it now!

Goodwill honored Casella Waste Systems, Inc. with its Spirit of Goodwill Award last week for its innovative work that prioritizes the sustainability of the earth and the stability of people.  

For the last seven years Goodwill Northern New England and Casella Waste Systems Inc. have shared knowledge and resources in an ever-changing world of resource management and job creation. The award recognizes the efforts the company has made in making Vermont more sustainable.

Vermont Business Magazine On November 5, 2019, the State’s Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Dam Safety Program, with the assistance of the Association of State Dam Safety Officials, will host a free workshop at the Pavilion Auditorium in Montpelier, Vermont. The workshop is for anyone interested in learning more about dam safety topics including information on the new draft dam safety rules, dam operation, maintenance, Emergency Action Planning, owner responsibilities and liabilities, and examples of how dams fail and case studies.  

“The new draft administrative dam safety rules will be presented and discussed. We hope to receive input and comments from the public during and following the conference as we move into formalizing these rules early next year,” said Ben Green, Dam Safety Engineer. “The Workshop will also feature a variety of dam safety presentations of interest to Vermonters.”
