An internal medicine physician with more than 20 years of experience and special board certification in infectious diseases has joined Gifford Medical Center.
Dr. James Currie joined Gifford’s internal medicine outpatient practice in Randolph this month. Internal medicine physicians provide primary care to adults. Infectious diseases are those that are contagious or communicable and include everything from the flu to HIV.
A Des Moines, Iowa, native, Dr. Currie attended first Iowa State University for his bachelor’s degree and then the University of Iowa College of Medicine in Iowa City, graduating in 1984.
He went on to an internship and residency at the University of Cincinnati Hospitals and Clinics and then fellowships at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals in Madison and the University of Illinois-Chicago/University of Chicago.
Since he has worked as an emergency room physician and hospitalist at Deaconess Hospital in Cincinnati and as an internal medicine physician at two hospitals in Illinois and most recently at Northern Colorado Medical Center and Medical Center of the Rockies, both in Colorado. He has also worked as a member of the full-time teaching faculty at Meridia Huron Hospital in East Cleveland and has had multiple medical director roles.
He is board certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases by the American Board of Internal Medicine and certified as a clinical densitometrist through the International Society of Clinical Densitometry. The latter means he is certified to read bone density scans.
Dr. Currie is also a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Society for Microbiology and the International Society for Clinical Densitometry.
He brings this breadth of knowledge and a total of 21 years of experience to Gifford for an opportunity to work in Vermont and at a hospital – and for a hospital administration – that is “very vested” in its community.
“I love Vermont. It’s beautiful,” says Dr. Currie of his impressions so far. “The people at Gifford have been very, very supportive. I’m really looking forward to working at Gifford. The environment seems to be really exceptional.”
Gifford Medical Director Dr. Josh Plavin calls Dr. Currie an asset to patients.
“Dr. Currie is both an Internist and an Infectious Disease expert and as such he will be a great asset to our patients and our providers. I am excited to again be expanding the local expertise of our Medical Staff to better serve our patients at Gifford,” Dr. Plavin said.
To the community he is now calling home, Dr. Currie brings an interest in treating infectious disease and what he calls prevention and health maintenance, or helping patients prevent health problems by, for example, eating healthy and quitting smoking.
Dr. Currie maintains a healthy lifestyle of his own. He fishes and hikes and plays music, especially the guitar, fiddle and piano. He is married and has two children. The family is living in Randolph while looking for a permanent home in the area.
