Psychiatrist Julie Poulin, MD, PhD, has joined the Behavioral Health team at Gifford Medical Center. Poulin brings to her role several years of experience in health care, most recently as medical director of psychiatric services and attending psychiatrist at Rutland Regional Medical Center. At Gifford, she looks forward to providing mental health treatment to outpatients, she said, “where I can really follow their progress.”
“It is a privilege to be able to know people’s stories, and I know it really helps to have someone listen,” said Poulin, whose approach to psychiatry is neurobiological but also considers psychosocial factors that impact health, such as “people’s past experiences, their environment, and choices they’ve made.”
Prior to her positions at Rutland Regional Medical Center, Poulin completed her residency at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, Penn. In addition to her clinical work, she has extensive experience in research and teaching, most recently at Castleton University in Castleton, Vt., and Franklin Pierce University in West Lebanon, N.H., and has published articles on topics ranging from sleep disorders and therapy to schizophrenia. She is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and is a member of the American Medical Association, American College of Physician Executives, and American Psychiatric Association. Among her numerous honors and awards are several fellowships, including an American Psychological Foundation / American Psychiatric Association Schizophrenia Research Fellowship Award. She earned doctor of philosophy, medical, and master of science degrees from the University of Montreal in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and a bachelor’s degree from Laval University in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.
When not at work, Poulin enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing golf, and traveling.
