The Flynn Center Board of Directors is pleased to announce three new trustee appointments: Clarence E. Davis of Burlington; Staige Davis of South Burlington; and Chiuho Duval of Burlington. Clarence E. Davis is the director of state relations at the University of Vermont and serves as special assistant to the president. Prior to joining the University of Vermont, Clarence served as a Congressional Assistant to the Honorable Bernard Sanders; Development Underwriter for the Vermont Housing Finance Agency, Director of Home Ownership Programs for the Central Vermont Community Land Trust, and as Vice President and Vermont State Manager for the First American Title Insurance Corporation. Clarence’s expertise is in strategic planning, public relations, relationship building, organizational analysis, regulatory compliance, policy development and implementation. He also has extensive experience in problem solving and consensus building in rapidly evolving business and political environments. He was born and raised in the Bronx, NY. He has served in the United States Navy and is a graduate of Norwich University, the Military College of Vermont. A passionate believer in community service, he was elected to the Burlington City Council in 2006 where he served the residents of Burlington until 2010. Clarence resides in Burlington with his wife Sandy and their son Coleman. His interests include cooking and playing music. Clarence is a student of the martial art of Aikido and continues to challenge himself physically through running and obstacle racing. He is a lifelong Yankees fan, although he often refrains from mentioning that fact in polite company. Staige Davis has been affiliated with Lang Associates for 34 years, beginning as an associate, then manager, and becoming president and owner in 1992. When Lang Associates merged with McLaughry Associates in 2007, Staige became CEO of what is now Lang McLaughry Real Estate. He has acted as board chair of the Vermont Community Foundation, Vermont Business Roundtable, Vermont Public Radio, and the Vermont Mozart Festival. He has also served on the boards of other organizations, including the University Of Vermont School Of Business, Champlain College, the Vermont Arts Council, and the Vermont Technology Council. This is Staige’s second time on the board of directors at the Flynn—he previously served for two decades right after the Flynn’s formation. He also served on what was then the management committee of the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts for two decades, an organization to which he is very proud to return. Staige was born in Baltimore, Maryland, to make Vermont his permanent home after receiving a B.A. from the University of Vermont in 1975. He is the father of two: Greta is attending Wake Forest University beginning Fall 2014, and Staige IV, currently attending his father's alma mater, UVM. In his free time, Staige enjoys a good snowfall for alpine skiing, Lake Champlain and the coast of Maine for boating and sailing, and the plentiful year-round opportunities our area offers in the visual and performing arts. A former photojournalist from Taiwan, Chiuho Duval is a master storyteller with an excellent sense of humor. Through her photographs, documentaries, and television news programs, she recreated life at its most poignant. But the broad strokes of media did not generate the individual personal connection or laughter she craved. Food was the answer. As a kid, she loved good food and was always hungry for more. In May 2001, she came to the United States to attend New England Culinary Institute, and found herself a job as a cook at A Single Pebble where she says she learned Chinese cooking backwards in English. She never knew she’d stay; but now Vermont is her home. As Chef-owner of Burlington’s A Single Pebble Restaurant, Chiuho has found the perfect vehicle to connect with her community and tell her story. At 42, she still has the optimism of a young girl who approaches each meal as a new opportunity to celebrate what it means to be a local. All three were elected to the Flynn Center’s Board of Trustees at their final meeting of the 2014 fiscal year on June 24, 2014. The Trustees honored Barbara Bronfman and Doug Wacek, for their service, and appointed Bonnie Reid Martin as a Trustee Emeritus.
