The Vermont Community Foundation is proud to announce Ben and Rosalie Harris as the 2009 David G. Rahr Community Service Award recipients. The St. Johnsbury couple has worked tirelessly and humbly on their community’s behalf for many years. They have volunteered with numerous organizations, including the Fairbanks Museum, the Caledonia Home Health Care Agency, and Congregation Beth-El, just to name a few. Prior to retiring, the couple operated Nate’s, a clothing business with stores in St. Albans, Montpelier, and St. Johnsbury. As part of the award, the couple was able to designate a $2,500 grant to the organization of their choice. Kingdom Community Services in St. Johnsbury will receive the grant, and in the words of Rosalie, “there is an obvious need to feed people who are hungry.”
This award was created by the Vermont Community Foundation Board of Directors in honor of David G. Rahr, its first president. It is given each year at the Foundation’s annual meeting and recognizes an individual or group that has made a significant contribution toward building healthy and vital Vermont communities. Award recipients are chosen from a different region of the state each year. The Harrises were honored by over 250 attendees at this year’s annual meeting in East Burke on September 22.
