KMS’s Bailey to be honored at Vermont Alpine Racing’s annual gala; Scheu to receive the George Tormey Scholarship Award

At its annual Celebration of Vermont Ski Racing Gala slated for Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Quechee Club in Quechee, The Vermont Alpine Racing Association (VARA) will present Killington Mountain School’s (KMS) Head Men’s Alpine Coach Jack Bailey with the Development Coach of the Year Award. KMS Senior Ben Scheu will receive the George Tormey Scholarship Award as well.

The Development Coach of the Year Award is given annually to the VARA and USSA coach who participates in VARA programs and home club events, shows a dedication to athletes and to the sport and its growth, plus an eagerness for continued education, enthusiasm and a talent for innovation.

Bailey joined KMS in 2009 after two years as J1/2 Head Coach at Waterville Valley Academy/BBTS Ski Club and eight years as a Men's Coach at Stratton Mountain School. He has coached athletes from the USSA up to the Nor-Am levels and has extensive experience in athlete management, training and conditioning. In addition to his coaching qualifications, Bailey is a USSA Coaching Clinician for the Eastern Region. He is a graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington with a degree in Business Economics and the Ski Industries Program.

Scheu, of Woodstock, began skiing at Stratton Mountain at age two. He also plays soccer, tennis, and swims, sails and does community volunteer work. “Athletes who have achieved success through hard work and commitment inspire me,” he said. The George Tormey Scholarship is awarded to the athlete who best displays a strong work ethic, strong character, and excels in a second sport. The amount awarded is $1,000.

Previous KMS alumni who have been awarded this award include David Coriell in 2000, Cody Larson in 2004, and Andrew Kimball in 2011. Past KMS coaches named coach of the year include Stever Bartlett in 2002, Lon Brettell in 2007 and Parker Gray in 2008. For more information visit www.vara.org.
