Laurie Gray is a twenty one year survivor of Breast Cancer. When she was 28, she felt a lump during a “self” exam and although she had no family history and a healthy lifestyle, she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer.
“At the time I had a 6 week old son and I was faced with surgeries, chemotherapy and reconstruction which in the end were “all” part of my “fight” for survival,” said Laurie.
“I have always been open about my experience to everyone in hopes to raise another person’s awareness. I am a huge advocate and living proof in encouraging early detection and breast cancer survival.”
Over the years Laurie has been involved with North Country Hospital and the American Cancer Society in several breast cancer awareness and support programs. In her continued support of Breast Cancer Awareness, she would like to share her recent birthday story.
“Last week my family “surprised” me with a 50th Birthday party / benefit auction for Breast Cancer Awareness. Everyone was dressed in pink. My son provided a slide show of my life and in lieu of gifts, local businesses donated items that were auctioned off to the highest bidder raising $1,968, explained Laurie. “My family knows that Breast Cancer Awareness is so close to my heart and it is “our” honor to donate the $1,968 to support our “Local” Breast Cancer Outreach Program.”
This program, at North Country Hospital Community Health, provides funds for women who are uninsured or underinsured (high deductibles) and are in need of mammograms (screening or diagnostic) and breast ultrasounds, and clinical breast exams. The program is partially funded through the VT/ NH Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and other local donations. When considering making a donation, what better place than for the women in our own community. “Although my life has taken many paths, I contribute my survival to early detection and treatment, as well as my faith and continued support from my family, friends and co-workers. I am truly blessed – Thank you to each of you!!! Remember to “Live Every Day to the Fullest” and to “Make the Most out of Everything You Do.” You can make a difference! Early detection is the best protection!
