Vermont Adult Learning Names New Directors

Vermont Adult Learning (VAL) is pleased to announce the hire of two new Directors:

Marcey Carver has joined the team of Directors at the Central Office in Waterbury as Director of Finance & Administration. Carver comes to VAL from Lydall Thermal/Accoustical, Inc. in St. Johnsbury, Vermont where she was the Assistant Controller. She has a long career history of Financial management and accounting. Carver recently completed her MS in Accountancy and has an MBA in Finance and Accounting from Washington University and received here BA from Wellesley College.

Susan Palmer is the new Director of Field Operations. Prior to coming to VAL, Palmer was Dean of Woodbury College, a staff attorney at Vermont Legal Aid, and Vermont Assistant Attorney General. She earned her J.D. at Cornell Law School, M.A. in English Literature at the University of Vermont, and Bachelor’s Degree at Middlebury College.

VAL is also very pleased to announce the promotion of R. Luke Dowley to the position of Director of Human Resources. Dowley has been HR Manager at Vermont Adult Learning since 2005. He earned a BA in English from Colorado College; MA in Human Relations from University of Oklahoma and is certified as a Professional of Human Resources.

Vermont Adult Learning employs approximately 100 staff at seven regional sites and is a member of Learning Works, Vermont’s statewide adult education and literacy system, serving more than 5,000 Vermonters a year. Vermont Adult Learning has led the formation of Learning Works since 2004, a statewide, comprehensive system of adult education and literacy. Learning Works is the first initiative of its kind in the U.S. and is made possible through the coordinated efforts of Central Vermont ABE, Northeast Kingdom Learning Services, The Tutorial Center of Bennington and Vermont Adult Learning. The centers provide free literacy services and job training to people 16 and over who are not otherwise enrolled in school. Services also include three pathways to a high school credential: The High School Completion Program for out of school youth ages 16-22, the Vermont Adult Diploma Program for adults over the age of 22, and the GED or Certificate of General Educational Development.
