Promotion announcement – Shaftsbury Field Station Commander

Colonel Matthew T Birmingham, Director of the Vermont State Police, is pleased to announce the following promotion: effective May 14, 2017, Detective Sergeant Thomas Mozzer, Diversion Investigator with the Narcotics Investigation Unit (NIU) based at Headquarters in Waterbury, is promoted to Lieutenant, Station Commander at the Shaftsbury Field Station. Lieutenant Mozzer has served the people of Vermont for more than 17 years, graduating from the Vermont Police Academy in early 2000. He began his career as a trooper at the Rutland Barracks, becoming a Sergeant and Patrol Commander there in 2008. In 2014 he was transferred to Detective Sergeant in NIU. Along with these duties, Lieutenant Mozzer has been a longtime member of the Vermont State Police Honor Guard, and has led the team since 2014. Lieutenant Mozzer will remain on the team as Honor Guard Commander.

A Vermont State Police Field Station commander is responsible for overseeing delivery of law enforcement services to the communities served by that station. The field station commander is the local representative of the Vermont State Police to the community it serves, and works with local officials and citizens to address public safety and law enforcement concerns in their service area.

The Shaftsbury Field Station provides police coverage throughout Bennington County, providing primary law enforcement services to the towns of Rupert, Dorset, Sandgate, Arlington, Sunderland, Shaftsbury, Glastenbury, Woodford, Searsburg, Readsboro, Stamford, and Pownal. The station also provides assistance as requested to the Bennington, Winhall, and Manchester Police Departments. The Shaftsbury Barracks patrols 205 miles of State Highways within Bennington County.
