Melinda Moulton appointed to state women’s commission

Governor Peter Shumlin has appointed Melinda Moulton to serve on the Vermont Commission on Women (VCW).

Commissioner Moulton is the Chief Executive Officer and Sustainable Redeveloper, along with President Lisa Steele, of the Main Street Landing properties on Burlington’s Lake Champlain waterfront.

Main Street Landing reflects a new model for development focused on ecological integrity, economic security, individual empowerment, and social well-being. Main Street Landing comprises over 250,000 square feet of new and renovated space, which includes 102 Lake Street, Union Station, CornerStone Building, Wing Building, Lake & College Building, and the Train Station. The spaces support arts and local culture, provide incubator office space for start-up businesses, nurture social responsibility, and educate people about environmental and social conscience. Commissioner Moulton lectures across the country on this new model of design, development, construction, and good business practice.

Commissioner Moulton presently co-chairs the Capital Campaign for the Lund Family Center, and serves on the boards of Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, Vermont Health Care for All, the College Steps Program, and the Vermont Folklife Center. Additionally, she serves on the Governor’s Council on Pathways From Poverty.

Commissioner Moulton has an extensive and varied record of community service. She chaired the boards of the Burlington Parking and Transportation Council, Burlington Business Association, Vermont Retail Association, and the Intervale Center. She served on the boards of the YMCA, Lund Family Center, Chittenden East School District, Opportunities Credit Union, Vermont Public Interest Research Group, the Orton Family Foundation, Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility, Audubon Vermont, and the Vermont Arts Council. She was a member of the Vermont Business Roundtable and Co-Chair of the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Campaign in 2011. Commissioner Moulton served on the Regional Affairs Committee of the Lake Champlain Chamber of Commerce, and on the Advisory Councils of the Vermont Green Building Network, UVM’s 2020 “Leading By Design” Sustainability Task Force, the Childhood Hunger Council of Chittenden County, Spectrum Youth Center, and Patient Choices Vermont. She participated on the development and ultimate steering committee for the Burlington Legacy Project sustainability plan. She serves as a Trustee of the Community Sailing Center and hosts the community access television interview show “On the Waterfront with Melinda,” featuring interviews with Vermonters engaged in service to their community.

“I have spent my entire adult life advocating and working for women's rights and opportunities,” said Moulton. “As a teenager growing up in the 1960's my passions grew from the equal rights and feminist movements. As a member of the Vermont Commission on Women, I hope to serve all women in our state to insure they have access to every opportunity available in order to attain their highest and most noble goals.”
