March of Dimes Board welcomes Chair of Communications

Shelli Guay of Milton is slated to join the Board of Directors for the March of Dimes Vermont Chapter on June 2. Guay’s intent to join the board will be announced at this Saturday’s March for Babies walk in Burlington, starting at 9:00am at Burlington High School.

Shelli became involved as a volunteer with the March of Dimes in 2004, shortly after the birth of her twin daughters, Emily and Kate, who were born 8 weeks premature. Shelli and her husband Peter, who also have a son, Evan, spent the girls’ first five weeks in the NICU (Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit) and Transition Nursery at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vermont.

Shelli made a promise to the girls while they were in the hospital that once they were home and settled she would get involved with the March of Dimes in appreciation and to help support their efforts. Shelli formed Team Guay with her family and friends, and has raised more than $5,000 during the past four years while walking for the March of Dimes.

“Shelli has contributed countless hours to the Vermont chapter, using her communications expertise to develop and implement outreach strategies”, says Roger Clapp, March of Dimes State Director, “This is one of the reasons we experienced 8% growth last year.” In addition to serving as a Mission Family, Shelli is a member of the NICU Family Support® committee, a partnership between the March of Dimes and Fletcher Allen Health Care that provides enhanced information and comfort to families of premature and other critically ill newborns, a past-co chair of the St. Albans March for Babies along with Krista Richardson, and a past and current committee member of the Burlington March for Babies.

Throughout the year, March of Dimes volunteers in Vermont raise more than half a million dollars to improve the health of babies and more than a third of the funding comes from the Burlington area. Vermont is investing in successful approaches to reduce premature birth and has achieved the top rating in the country for reducing the incidence of premature birth.
