JSC Dean of Students David Bergh receives national recognition

David Bergh, dean of students at Johnson State College, has been accepted into the American Association of State Colleges and Universities’ (AASCU) Millennium Leadership Initiative (MLI) as a protégé in the MLI Class of 2012.
The recognition by AASCU is a major honor. Many past MLI graduates have moved into higher positions at U.S. colleges and universities; 59 graduates have assumed presidencies.
Bergh has worked in student affairs at JSC for 15 years and has served as dean of students since 2005. He oversees residence life, public safety, health and counseling services, service learning, athletics and recreation, student activities and government, and the Upward Bound program, and he shares oversight of JSC’s Office of First-Year Experience. A member of the President’s cabinet, he serves as the College’s Title IX officer and is involved in all major college planning efforts. He also advises the Vermont State Colleges (VSC) Student Association and chairs the VSC student affairs council.
Bergh also is active in the Johnson community, where he lives. He’s been appointed to both the Town of Johnson and the Lamoille County planning commissions, and he serves on the board of Laraway Youth & Family Services, a nonprofit alternative education and therapeutic foster care agency in Johnson.
Earlier in his career at JSC, he served as the president of the Vermont state chapters of the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA).
Bergh holds a doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies from the University of Vermont, where his dissertation focused on successful first-generation and low-income college students. He received a master’s degree in public administration from the University at Albany-SUNY and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Allegheny College.
