The Vermont chapter of the American Red Cross has honored Steve Costello for his leadership and unwavering dedication to the community.
In a March 29 ceremony at Roots in Rutland, Costello was presented with the organization's Everyday Hero Award for his significant and lasting impact on blood-collection efforts in Vermont. In the last year alone, Costello has logged more than 160 volunteer hours advocating for blood donation and helping to secure the national blood supply.
“Not only is Steve an avid blood donor himself, but through his efforts over the years he has helped to ensure that a sufficient and safe blood supply is available to Vermonters in need,” said Executive Director Kevin Mazuzan.
Costello’s mission to raise awareness about the lifesaving power of blood donation spans nearly two decades. In 2003, the Gift of Life Marathon started as an employee-led drive at Central Vermont Public Service Corporation, where Costello worked. The drive collected 368 pints that first year – and, under Costello’s leadership and collaboration with Terry Jaye of WJJR Catamount Radio, has grown every year since.
Local author Stefanie Schaffer, who also serves as a Gift of Life Marathon ambassador, assisted Mazuzan in presenting Costello his award.
“Blood donations saved my life. And then, blood donations gave me back my life," Schaffer said. “I’m incredibly grateful to Steve for being such a passionate advocate and for inspiring so many in this community to give the gift of life.”
