Green Up Day 2009 winners announced for writing and poster design contests

Green Up Vermont announced winners in its annual writing and student poster design contest for Green Up Day 2009. Olivia Bellingham, Grade 5 from Flood Brook Union School was the overall winner. The artwork features a smiling, young girl in an orange dress who is putting litter in its place, in a trash can. The poster can be viewed by visiting the Green Up website at www.greenupvermont.org. Posters distributed statewide in April help promote participation in Green Up Day the first Saturday in May, May 2, 2009.

Writing contest winner is Elise Seyforth, Grade 11 from Mount Anthony Union High School. Winners will be honored at Green Up’s Annual Awards Banquet on March 27th, at the Capitol Plaza in Montpelier. Also to be honored is Lyman Orton, of the Orton Foundation, as the 2009 Governor Deane C. Davis Green Up Citizen of the Year.

Green Up Day May 2, 2009 marks the 39th year of Vermont’s unique tradition of thousands of volunteers annually cleaning up their communities’ roadsides, public places and waterways. Vermont was the first state in the nation to designate a special day for cleaning the entire state. Green Up Vermont is the not-for-profit organization responsible for continuing Vermont’s Green Up tradition. The success of Green Up depends on volunteers who make the clean up happen and on financial contributions from the public and private sector. Anyone can help. For your town’s coordinator, visit www.greenupvermont.org. or call the Green Up Vermont office at 802-229-4586, or 1-800-974-3259.
